Chaos Engine editor released

Not only that, it allows you take a peek at how the game levels were scripted, and more. You can export all the graphics from the original amiga500 (16 color mastery!), atari st and amigaCD32 versions.
WHEN we decide to do a commercial critique of it one day, this tool will be invaluable :)

Yes, there's been a CC of Chaos Engine.

It might be interesting to compare Chaos Engine graphics to Chaos Engine 2 graphics and try to understand what went wrong... CE2 looks horrible.

Pah! My bad. I've been on Pix for a while now, but obviously I missed a lot of stuff :P
Chaos Engine really is an obvious choice for CC. I'm really sorry that I wasn't there when it happened, guess I'll just read through it all.

Anyway, I think it is quite obvious what 'went wrong' with chaos engine 2. First, it was rushed, while the first game took forever to make. Second, Dan Malone has been known to make notoriously sterile artwork if he's given enough colors. Take a look at AGA version of chaos engine and you'll see how plastic it all looks. No hue shifts, and the color choices are... uninspired. This is also true for his more recent endeavors, Rebound (palm?) and Harry Potter (gba). His subpixelling is still impeccable but there's hardly any trace of the atmosphere conveyed in Cadaver, Speedball2 or Chaos Engine.

CE2 had a lot of recycled graphics as well, with different colours. But Bitmap Brother's done that before, there was a lot of stuff on Magic Pockets that was recycled from Gods.

Talking of Dan Malone, I just noticed he's got a gallery on dA.
