This is great, thank you!! This is better than I expected because it talks about all aspects of composition, something I was aware of but haven't really been mindful of. It's already inspired me to make some great sketches. Some of the pictures there are quite awe inspiring. I also just think of other ways to use each of the same elements for use in say character design. This was so suddenly inspirational to me. lol

What happened there actually what I was hoping would break out in this thread here XD

I've certainly created such atrocities in the past.

He's a bit more manly but I'm sure he qualifies

General Discussion / Understanding Great Composition
« on: November 14, 2008, 10:21:14 pm »
Usually when I do art its just characters but lately I've been getting really interested in composition and how to make a complete picture that tells a story and generally feels good to look at.
Unfortunately while searching for information they generally all tell me the same things but rarely give me any examples. I know a lot of you guys here are knowledgeable in many techniques of art and know a lot of classic and iconic pieces so I was wondering if anyone has some outstanding example of great composition Modern or Classic. Possibly methods you use when creating a picture.

I remember reading recently about Phi and the Rule of thirds some where here which I've used a couple times but haven't created anything I'm pleased with yet.

An interesting link, figured someone might enjoy it. I especially like the the Rubix cube pixel art and the picture by Chiho Aoshima (despite it not really being pixel art). Also noticed alot of isometric stuff...
It's odd to me but it seems when someone says pixel art people automatically assume it to be the isometric variety. Atleast in my experiences.

very nice so far, I like how you've tried to add texture to the materials and such so that leather looks like leather and hair like hair etc. It's making some odd random pixels and noise but if you cleaned it up somewhat i think it would look great.

For Uvs I think you might be able to crunch your UVs into 2 32x32 textures. You'll probably have to cut out a bit of detail though. Like snader said, textures can be facing any direction so long as the UVs line up properly. Also in the way of stretching I've found that once you start texturing after your first UV pass youll have to fix up the UVs as you go along so as to not have stretching and also so you dont get weird half pixels and such (sometimes these are just unavoidable though)

I'm still trying to understand how to texture things in 3-dimensions as well. One way to understand the lighting easier could be to light your model and then use those shadows as reference to light your textures. Obviously because of the low polys you'll have to imagine clothing folds and such but it should give you a much better idea overall.

As for the arm and leg http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-merge-points-and-edges-on-geometry-in-blender-196570/ this tutorial may help you. (I dont use blender so D:)

Hope this helps :D

seems off balance, i think you should move her upper body or head back abit so they are situated above her legs. So her body shape would look more like a C than \.

really cool though, I really like the style. : D

Fixed walk cycle, also tweaked some upper body animation.
Trying to work on a new palette to make him more interesting looking.
also created Kayo now

Textures are usually sized in multiples of 8 I think it was. Otherwise it causes some kinds of problems that I have yet to encounter. UVing is hell, it's so difficult to unwrap a model and have no weird deformations on the textures while keeping everything within a small square and have minimal visible seams. High poly stuff is the worst, its like doing a puzzle with no pieces that fit together. If you use maya I found a nice tool which lets your snap UVs to pixels which makes it easier when doing stuff like this though I'm sure other programs probably have something similar. I think you could probably rearrange these texture easily though or seperate them into 2 smaller files to save wasted space.

These are incredible though, you managed to do the textures really well though despite the large empty spaces. Do you have any images of the wires? Also have you rigged them at all? I'd love to see some of them in motion.

Pixel Art / Re: What Villainy Hast Thou Commited?[WIP]

Nice work so far. The crumpled paper I think looks more like a flower than crumpled paper. It would probably look more crumpled if the whole flat surfaces were highlighted more rather than just the edges.

Also do you plan to dither his whole face? it looks kind of odd at the moment.

I really like how the hair is looking right now.

As for the villiany.. drawing on lined paper? An atrocity I practiced many times as a child o. o
