Anyway, Having trouble with the hair, probably the AA and anything else you can point out! Anyway, let me have all of your suggestions, I'd like to finish this in the next week. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity.. what's the process you used to get to this point?

Forgive me if I'm totally off here but this really looks like a color reduced photo with a little touch-up? Now, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that goes agains the grain of pixelation? I might be wrong...   ???

...If it's hand drawn, from reference, from scratch, then fair-play, looks fantastic.

1) As Eck said, if you're copying a photo you should include the reference

2) If you actually pixelled that it's quite impressive, but there is a severe misuse of dithering. While dithering allows you to cheat and get "more" colors, it also adds a texture to whatever you use it on. Dithering things like hair and flesh often yields bizarre or freakish results... That's what's messing the hair up - hair has strands, not random little pinpricks of light. At the very least it gives the appearance that you just reduced the colors in Photoshop (whether you did or didn't)

Given your color count and the size of the image you should be perfectly capable of making it look good without all that dithering.

There's a lighter colour than the background on his shaulder to our right.. looks out of place considering the jacket is black.

This is what I referenced when I started on this guy, I haven't used a reference for a few weeks though and have just been "feeling" the piece:

At any rate, I haven't color reduced this, or used any special way to pixel his face, just my usual pixeling except in this case I am taking my time, trying AA, etc..

As far as the shirt goes, Its rough right now and I'm really trying to get the face and hair just right. I like the darker look compared to the reference photo, what do you guys think?

@Ben: I tried doing strands, but in the end it just looked like a blurred mess of brown running down his head, Im really really bad at hair, IE: why picard was so fun.

@bacca: The only thing I've ever reduced in photoshop was a picture of jet black from cowboy bebop about 5 years ago, I agree, it does go against the grain of pixeling, and is a waste of time.

Why are you trying to lie to us here? That is not the ref you used.

More like this. The face matches up rather nice when you size it down.

It also has the exact same filename apart from filetype. Coincidence?
Explain yourself.

uh ok, whatever, I knew coming back to this forum would be a waste of time.

To be honest: I didn't trace/reduce/whatever any of this, I haven't looked at a reference in a while, I grabbed the first "han solo" pic that looked like the one that I first used off google.

I really appreciate you guys are trying to make sure I'm not cheating here, but the fact is, I need help with the hair, not to be called out on some bogus color reduction theory.

and on that note, see ya guys, if anyone actually wants to help me with the hair, being positive and not accusing me of reducing please see me on pixeljoint.

It really sucks that you guys don't give me the benefit of the doubt here.

Oh and one last thing, go color reduce that ref that you posted, and lets see how long it takes you to match what I've done. I'd like to see the kind of color reduction tools that personally put the pixels in where I put them, please.

You do not agree that the one I posted fits exactly? Look at the collar.

Dude, I totally agree with you, theres 2 of those poses, gun up and gun down, i used the gun up one that you posed originally as a reference, today I'm at work and quickly got whatever one looked like what I had been working on off google, I assure you I didn't freaking color reduce this.

Like i said in my edit, go try it yourself, if you can get the same results through color reduction/adjusting the palette then you win. But I know I win, because I've spent over 35 hours on him.

See this is my practice piece, learning to do really small details on faces, I wanted to do better than my picard.
