Self-Portait

on: September 17, 2007, 02:51:32 am

And the photograph image of me:  http://file-pasta.com/r/1929

I've gotten comments about the eyes looking like I have to wear glasses, and the overall image being pixelated looking, rather than a nice clean pixel image.  I tried fixing that up on the left side, but I could still use some critique and advice.  Thanks!

As far as likeness goes....I'd say that you could really benefit from higher contrast between shades, as you've got a good start in on the right picture.

I think if you make the canvas a bit bigger you might be able to make it look a bit less pixellated  :-\....also, I think if you didn't save it as .jpg it might help a little bit...try something like .png or .gif  ;).

edit:
don't save it as .jpg then .png?

Man cannot remake himself without suffering for he is both the marble and the sculptor.

EDIT:  Oops.  I was linking to the wrong pixel image.  Thanks!  I'll see if I can get a little contrast inside.  As for the small size, I think my head and some of my upper body might be a bit overdoing it for that size, but the true work in pixel art is large detail in small spaces! :D

Well I did some color reduction, but I can't tell how many colors I'm using or make the edits I want because I'm using MS Paint, so I have to try and refind the same color every time I go to edit this image and make shading/hue improvements.  I'm not sure if I like this or not.  It's a real simple image now, but it's missing some of the finer details I liked of the original and first edit.

Thanks for the help so far.  I'm fairly new to pixel art (this is really the first or second image I've made).  If I can't get it working right, I'll try different images/resolutions for a while.

Are you going to have a colour in the background? I think if you do it'd make the heavy outlines either side of his face look better.

Good idea.  I'm used to using transparent backgrounds for use in computer programs, actually XD  *steals color scheme he's seen here lately*
