Ah complete and utter boredum, how I love thee.

on: April 18, 2007, 09:53:16 pm
Yep, I was bored, so I decided to draw a bunneh based on a skecth from my sketchbook. I was very bored, I even attempted some A/A, I doubt I did it very well, but it was worth a shot. 45 minutes.

Shit. The A/A looks horrible on this nackground color..Ill upload the white background one in a sec....

There we go....

I'm not going to pretend this is a small task either; certainly none of us here can claim to have accomplished it.  it's the realm of masters.  still, it's what we all have to try for.

It's not the background colour.  It's the fact that the aa needs some serious work.  You've gone completely overboard.  It reminds me of something that's been poorly photocopied.  You have a huge contrast between the main colours and the outline which isn't solid so it just looks like parts of the lines are just plain missing.  The straggler pixels outside the outline just decrease readability, they don't convey fuzziness (if that's what you were aiming for).  Oh, and bunnies usually have longer ears, this little guy looks more like a beaver, IMO.

I actually agree with everything you said... I am horrible at A/a, both knowing where to use it..and selecting colors, so it is no suprising I overdid it. It also seems I lost quite a bit of definition, and saturation when I saved it  :'(..anyways, I appreciate your comments, and I'll work on it.

That, and it's a JPEG. Very bad decision. As always stated.

Well, that happens for not reading what they offer. It is clearly stated on the site that bmp will be automatically changed into jpg.
Evil? maybe, but they warn you. So, read TOS, FAQs or whatever before signing up to anything :P
But anyway, BMPs aren't meant to be online.

As for the picture,
AA is pretty much for smoothing your lines. It is more complex than just adding a color on all the edges. If you lean towards the bg, your lines will look broken, and if you lean towards the lines, it will still look jaggy. So you have to find the perfect harmony (to call it somehow) At the same time you have to care about the image not looking blurry. It is more or less like a puzzle.
On yours the AA is random, and the color choice is bad (most of them are too close, and AA and shading do not work properly)
Overalll it is kinda dirty, (like on the mouth, why does it have random black pixels)
Oh also, white is a bad color to AA against.

Anyway to sum it up into a phrase, if you do something, do it for a reason. Don't add random shadows just because, plan where they have to go, Don't AA randomly, just do so on places where you think it needs it (you should check both zoomed and unzoomed versions of your picture to ensure your AA is working properly). Don't kill readability for randomness (unless it is intended)
