Help with simple running animation

Hey guys I'm working on a simple RPG-Roguelike game and am trying to do the pixel art myself. I crated the main character artist using inspiration from character shown at the end of this:

however, I can't seem to get it looking right, it just ends up looking like a mess. How should I go about making a running animation for such a small sprite.

Start with how many frames you want the animation to be. 2 frame run cycles tend to be kind of stiff, while more complex ones are more smooth.
Work from there.
