what are his knives made of? right now, they just look like red. try to add some real description with your pixels - on the weapons and elsewhere - rather than just color and general form. you'll be surprised what you can get out of a little spot of light or dark, or a different hue.
for instance, check out the sabre in my avatar. it's smaller than your guy's knives, but you can tell that it's a warm, maybe brassy metal, curved, and has a basket hilt. it's all about controlling your variables - color and value and placement - to get the desired effect.
