Wattsie's Mega Ultra Super Training Thread

on: April 08, 2008, 04:27:27 pm
Well, i got idea's, and here they are.
I decided to make mockup characters. Players and enemy's.
I used a colour pallette i found on here somewhere. I will upload that with them.

So, Here is "Monster A" in 4 different versions.

And here is the colour pallette.

If anyone would like to contribute any idea's for players, monsters or scene's... feel free.
Thanks ~

The palette seems to be pretty neat, but there is not much to comment on since the characters posted are extremely small. The topic says "Mockup", so you should actually show us one ;).
Sorry for my english.

I updated Space Man

Made some mountain tiles

(The box around them is for when i get round to making more tiles)

And mock upped =]

(I say its best to view the mockup at x2 or x3 zoom.

There's definitely not enough contrast in that mockup. I'd recommend lightening up the medium shade of blue.

I think the backdrop has too much contrast, and the foreground, not enough.

If anything behind your character is very contrasting it comes across as too busy since your eyes cannot imediately focus onto what the player needs to, characters, enemies and objects. If you are to detail the back I'd make sure it doesn't conflict with the foreground atall.

With your tiles I think you can afford more contrast just so you have better control of shape, by that I dont think just tweaking the contrast higher is really necissery. But just use that black where it can do some good. also the stoney shapes should continue down not just fade off into a shapeless gradient.

quick edit not adressing any colour changes I'd make or anything, just trying to make a small suggestion. Tiling on my behalf could be better.

I did something similar too, but with no real restrictions.

If you're going for a bold coloured style like Kennethfejer tends to do, notice the backdrops are still not as contrasting as the foreground, tending to be slightly dulled down also to draw the focus to where's intended.

Wattsie's Mega Ultra Super Training Thread

Reply #6 on: April 11, 2008, 08:10:32 am
Which isnt so mega ultra super yet.
I am using this thread to practice different aspects of pixel art.
Please give me crit no matter how harsh, i can take it.

Here is my first subject.

The first 4 are kind of circular objects.
1) Cleanly Shaded
2) Dithered
3) AA'ed
4) My Weird Style Idea

Next 3 are kind of isometric cube things.
1)Clean Colouring
2)Highlight Shading
3)Dithered

This last one is a kind of jelly.
1)I put AA on it. My first jelly.

Dithering can create the illusion of a new color, usually you will use this to increase the ammount of colors that can be seen in an image without actually increasing the colour count. In your dithered circles the amount of colors that can be seen by the eye is still 3, which in my opinion makes the dithering a bit pointless (It is also reducing the contrast in your image compared to the cleanly shaded one).

The shape of the circles could be more rounded too ;O

Your AA is quite fine, all I'll crit is that you could have AA'd the against the outline in some parts.

Good job overall, keep training!

Thankyou
I was trying to AA the outline
but seen as mine aren't full rounded circle's i saw no point.
As AA'ing on a 45 degree line would just make it blurry.
And help for AA on the outside?

Kinda missing the point...you've drawn octagons that you are shading like circles, this makes no sense and is not good practice for anything.  Shading is not some arbitrary ruleset, it is the simulation and/or emulation of the way light interacts with volumes.  Also, use more colors, don't use outlines, and hit up the tutorials thread in General!
