[WiP] Walking Animation

on: August 14, 2007, 08:46:54 pm
Hello! I'm new here. Nice to meet you all. :)
I've been doing sprites on my freetime for some time now and I've had tons of trouble animating things. I started on this one a few days ago and I think it's starting to look good. I just added his right arm in a hurry, and will change it once I get the time. C+C appreciated.

I focused on the animations on this one, so try to ignore the boring design. :P

I love it, and I think you've done most of what you can with regular pixel motion save for a few jigglies (feet passing frame, right hand extreme frame).  Although, i think he would be really cute if he wobbled side-side.

What you need to do now if you want to improve it technically is get into subpixel to make the movement a little more specific and fluid.  If you don't know the term, a forum search will take youto places that will explain it far better than I could in the moment I have before getting back to work.
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Very nice! I generally agree with Adarias, and would like to add a suggestion of my own - try making the helmet's "lid" lag behind the head and bounce a little with each step, for that extra cuteness :)

Thanx for the tips! I'm going to study some subpixeling.

I updated it a little, making his "lid" jump while ha walked. I like how it turned out, though it might jump a bit too much. What do you say? Great sugestion anyway, ejay :)

I tried removing the black outlines and replace them with darker shades. Does it look any better?

Yeah, he's suposed to hold a sword, but I've been having some problems with animating it. I'll put up the sword-holding version later. I'm currently studying the animations on the megadrive game Soleil (also known as Ragnacenty)

Looks great, much better without the black outline, IMO .
Is this going to be used in an actual game or is it just for practice ?

Wow. Thats the perfect example for the difference between a black outline and just dark shades. I love it :D

Thanx, people! :) I also prefer it without the dark outlines. At first I just made it to get the hang of a walk animation, but I've been thinking of putting him in a game.
