The main point of aa is to make things smooth.  I find that it usually turns out better if you aa into the lines, not the outside of them, if that makes sense...The aa should not make the object any bigger.

Also, I think that it usually turns out a little smoother if the aa color is not exactly between the the two colors being aa'ed...for instance, instead of halfways, I go about a third towards the bg color....but this may be person preference.


It's not the best, but maybe this can help a bit.  Props for practice!

I think to AA black to white you should use two AA shades.
Especially on something of this size.

I see. But you can't always just AA 'into the lines'.
Sometimes the picture requires you to AA into the white for the sake of definition. (It's for example the eyes in this piece. I don't want them to get any bigger.)

I actually think a light gray would work better than this darker one you added, It's barely visible on my (fairly bright) monitor.
It's pretty cool otherwise.

Indeed. It's black and white, so the two aa'ing shades should be halfway between to make best use of colour.

On a piece this large, it would be a good idea to have 2 AA shades. At the moment the AAing is hardly visible from far away. Also, that isn't selout, it's just outer AA.

Very cool and dramatic looking though, however the hands are a little odd looking, the fingers look a bit like like bananas.

Yeah, AA shades tend to lean closer to the lighter color than the darker, especially if the difference is as big as black and white.
Nice character though.
