Recoil Joy - Aesthetic Opinion

on: September 25, 2017, 07:23:47 pm
Heya, Pixel People

What's your aesthetic opinion of my side-project, Recoil Joy?

Is it bland?
Is it shallow?
WHat?!

It does feel a bit bland. The colours are all a bit dull and have a blue cast, except for the dirt, which draws attention to itself precisely because it stands out more than even the actual walkable grass does. Consider adding some warmth (yellow) to the greens so that they stand out better from the blue background, and using a less saturated colour for the dirt, so that it doesn't jump out so much.

The jumping lacks impact and looks floaty. Consider having the character jump and fall faster, but with "gravity" slowing them down faster as well. That should make the jumping feel more natural and "punchy".
Similarly, the recoil feels very weak and slow for a game with "recoil" in its title. Consider making the initial acceleration from the recoil higher, but again, fade it off quicker to compensate.

The enemies all feel rather bland. I like the cartoony look of them and I love their death faces, but they don't seem to have any sort of theming, and the death faces all being largely the same feels like a missed opportunity to give them (and the game) more personality.

On the subject of personality, the environment feels very scattered, like you're not sure what you're going for with it. It doesn't seem to tell any sort of story or establish a mood, and it has both realistic parts (the palms, the dullish green colours of the palms and grass) and abstract parts (the smiling... hills?, the stylised grass and dirt, the sky...). If you're not using the environment to help tell the story, maybe focusing more on the abstract parts and making everything more cartoony would help.

Whew, that's a lot, but it's totally what I was looking for.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been a bit hesitant in creating the theme, but I'll make a sound decision before I release the game. I actually feels as though I'm discovering a more cartoony style so I'll go in that direction. I'll also take your advice in regard to colors.

be back soon with another update soon.

Ok,

So I changed the color of the dirt and grass a bit and tweaked the jumping to be more snappy. I also removed the realistic trees.

Still a bit more to go though.

What do ya think?

I think that's better and the jumping looks good to me now!

Consider adding more hue-shifting:

I made the grass highlights yellower, the nearest cloud/hill layer bluer, made the bullet icons range from yellow to dark red instead of them being all shades of the same orange hue, and made the ground range from purple to orange instead of just red. This makes the colours feel less dull. I didn't change the characters at all, but you could do the same thing with them to make them look more interesting too.
I also made the ground a little duller as it was very saturated and attention-grabbing for something relatively unimportant. I think now the grass stands out better, as it should - the grass is where the player has to walk/land.

Also, while the old palms did look out of place, I do think you should have some palms and other level details instead of just leaving them out. But, they should fit the style of the rest of the world.

Ok,

I'll have to go back and do the hue shifting because that looks wayyy better. Meanwhile, I changed up the slimes and a few other things.

Ugh, this game is so happy-go-lucky now lol. I suppose that is natural though. I'm still going to take a break until I get more inspiration for things to add.

Thanks for the feedback.
