[C+C] Critique with a fine-toothed comb plz

on: April 21, 2016, 03:26:29 am
So been getting back into pixel art lately and been working on this run cycle:

I'm still working on the hair and face so try just look at the body, arms and legs. :)
Looking for critique on colors, flow, proportions, anything you can think of! even if there's something that just don't feel right, having a second set of eyes is always the best thing. Haven't done any of this in a while so some good ol' critique will probably put me back in shape. I'll update with the hair and face when I'm happy with it but it's seriously taking me ages!

Alright well I got around to finishing her hair which I'd say I'm pretty happy with. :) Let me know what guys think! Not sure how I feel about the colors, any criticism would be awesome! Might do a few palette changes and see how it looks.

She seems very floaty to me. Almost looks like she is running like she is submerged in water.

Yeah I can see that. Her hair is very flowy and I could probably speed up her animation a bit. She's getting heaps or air time.

Her feet might need more ground time. Hard to say without looking at the frames. Ill attempt an edit after I get home from work.

Going to double post just so it shows that I replied.

Here is my edit. Nothing fancy. Reduced the animation by two frames and gave her a bit more of a drop on her down step.

Cool, I've done a speed edit for comparison, 8 frames on the left, 10 frames on the right. Tried to keep their speed somewhat the same even with differing number of frames. Added some ground in to see the point of contact a bit better.

Would be good to get some more thoughts. Is the hair flowing too much? Is there enough contrast or does the lighting need improved? Is she jumping too high with each step?

Obviously the 10 frame sprite *looks* nicer on its own, but the 8 frame sprite is definitely workable. The best judgment call really depends on how much work you want to do for all of your *other* animations (not just for your main char, but enemies/etc. too since consistency in animation speed/timing is a must!) This also depends on the frame rate you're going for in your game.

As for the sprite itself, the hair has just enough follow-through for being a little stiff, but not too much. The contrast in the shading in the legs/shirt could definitely be improved. Look at the contrast in the hair and try to match it closer to that contrast-wise because on darker monitors or on tablets/laptops in battery-saving modes, you wouldn't be able to see the shading in the jacket at all, and the pants you'd really have to look hard for it (even on my desktop, in which I'm viewing it right now!)

The animation doesn't have enough of a bend to the back leg which /kinda/ makes her appear she's jumping each step rather than just running. If you're going for a light jog as her upper-body suggests, you should consider varying the bend in the back leg just a bit more because her legs suggest she's in full sprint/run while her upper-body and hips suggest she's simply jogging. Hope this makes sense.

Hey thanks for that. I can really see the colours now. They definitely need some work.

I was just about to ask a question about the back leg and then saw it! It's strange how long it takes to get a piece finished and as much as it drags it out, the review process is almost always necessary.
