kim jong un

on: November 16, 2012, 11:23:29 pm
Hi,
I started doodling him today, in class. So what do you think.
I obliviously need help with the hair, and the eyes aren't perfect either...
I also tried out some sub-pixeling didn't like the result much...

Immediately recognisable. And up close, good handling of pixel shapes. Congrats. The palette could use some normalization on the low end (not enough shades) but it's not mandatory. The rest of the likeness is hiding in the non-central lightsource. Time to stop mirroring?

Super fast 5 minute edit in that direction

I agree on not mirroring here, on the hair as well.
Also if you look at that small photo you can see that his eyes are a bit closer together, his eyebrows are less dark, he has a bit more forehead, and I would try to accentuate his blobby neck a bit more. Look how it gets squished together by his collar.

Thank you helm!
Palette normalization? But people on /IC/ told me to use less colors. But I guess you are right, although my art tends to have less darker shades.
Ok, I stopped mirroring. And he does look better, but I remember that I pulled it off the last time I was drawing a dictator. (Muammar al-Gaddafi)
So what do you think?

@ptoing
What about the hair? I have trouble with it, and no matter what I do it still looks bad.
I made his forehead a little larger and brought his eye slightly together.
also changed his nose around slightly.

And here is the new version:

I played around with the hair some more:

New hair is better for sure. Nitpick, on both the left and right you got a pixel of aa which sticks out, removing that will help.

The new eyes look a bitt derpy, like he is walleyed. Mainly because of where the black of the eye is.

Eyes less or more derpy?
and removed your pixel and made the aa better.

Eyes were much better before. I think ptoing just meant that the pupils look like they're pointing in opposite directions (especially when zoomed).
Maybe:

I think the overall likeness could do with some work yet, some general advice: I've done a fair amount of portraiture, and I'd say it's helpful to overstate distinctive features, to the point of caricature and scale back if needed; it often isn't.

Big things: he had tiny shoulders; he's a fairly chubby guy, I also think you've lent him far more neck than he credits :P.

Smaller things: I actually thinned his face slightly for proportion, he lacked a top lip & I think his whole mouth area is actually quite characteristically smaller and more puckered. Your eyes & brows pulled down at the corners which I couldn't see at all in ref; larger, lighter ears, more amusing hair.

Edit - yeah, went overboard on the shoulders.
