Pixel art terminology/glossary

on: July 03, 2010, 09:37:27 am
Is someone able to make a list of terms and define them? Or link to a site that has done this? There's lots of words that new people might not understand, like banding, clusters etc. etc. so it would be nice to have a thread that can contain all the words in one place.

I'm pretty wary of suggesting Pixelation adopts terminology I use to describe my own experiences with pixels. If something like this happens, it'll happen organically. I see no reason 'cluster' can't be called 'group' or 'shape' or whatever. If anything I only have to offer banding.

I think such a list, if too extensive, might serve as fuel for more cryptic critique. I see many of the terms used here more as short-cuts in critique for more experienced forum users. If such a list is needed for things other than basic terms, like dithering or anti-aliasing, maybe it means that critique to new users needs to be more informative?

I understand you don't want to "govern" the stuffs. But on the other hand I think we have a strong need for vulgarizing/popularizing in order to speak the same language and prevent the blasting of this damn Tower of Babel.

I do not see a tower of babel effect in Pixelation, everyone that is told antialias this or banding that, if they're interested enough, can do a search on the forums. That minimum amount of proactivity is requisite for anyone wanting to grow and learn as an artist. An issue out of nothing. But if anyone wants to make a list, feel free.
