HeroBit RPG (WIP) (C+C)

on: April 04, 2013, 03:54:21 pm
Hello Pixelation dwellers!

I'm currently working on a Nintendo Entertainment System styled RPG for PlayStation Mobile titled "Hero Bit". The goal behind "Hero Bit" is to bring a retro styled high production value RPG to the PlayStation Mobile platform. At the current moment I don't the narrative or story developed for "Hero Bit", but that will come after I'm satisfied with the current artwork for the title. I'm currently in need of some constructive criticism to ensure the game looks good.

The typeface needs a lot of improvement, that is the first thing that caught my eye. The letters are wobbly and melting, and of varying heights (which is a common but glaring mistake). Give the letters a more or less uniform height, especially 'ero' and 'it' and the floating 'o'. It's good that you're trying to throw some style on there and get swoopy with the 'Her', but it isn't working. There's no pattern I can discern to the style so it's all mismatched. The vertical backbone of an 'R' shouldn't extend past the horizontal 'hat' that forms the top of the curve of the R, if anything this horizontal line should extend just barely beyond the |backbone. If 'Bit' is supposed to read as pixels then remove the shading, that makes them read as 3d cubes or orbs. Though you should consider making all of the letters a little 3d rather than flat

example von Helm:

pixel-wise you've got a lot of banding going on.

The blonde kid: walk cycle looks like he's peddling a bike, full sprite has t-rex arms. lacks ear which creates unnatural hairline.
armor guy: same stumpy arms, not enough contrast between the reds of the cape.
skeleton/zombie: legs too meaty, lacks pelvis, could generally be more skeletal.
