Pixel Art / Re: Beginner looking for advice
« on: April 25, 2012, 04:32:31 am »
Ok, since I'm still getting used to the forum, here is the latest image, at the right size (I will be more careful next time). I moved the shadows, the lightsource is from bottom right.

The character is an incomplete doodle, but the idea is that it floats. Like a seamonkey. I would like to animate it. I thought a good simple floating animation is a fair start, keeping it simple. I was hoping someone could recommend a good animation package for sprites. Is Image ready in Photoshop CS worth working with?

Hi, I'm new to pixel art, but I have a fair idea on contrast. Everything looks nice, but the colors of the mushroom. Put the mushroom next to the tree that you mentioned you showed before. You'll notice its blurry compared to the vibrant color of the tree. I agree that a mockup would either average the colors or show that contrast needs to be adjusted, so it would be nice to see that.

Pixel Art / Beginner looking for advice
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:14:18 am »
I just started pixel art. I threw together a simple doodle - please don't mind the characteristics, I just wanted to get curves in there. This is my first time pixeling over lineart. The shading on the chest is opposite the lighting and I did it without any real reason. I wanted to know what I should practice with first, what I should do to enhance this. Even though it's just a doodle, I'll stick with it. If you want, please go ahead and fill in anything you want.

I'm showing 3 pictures. The doodle, the pixel lineart, and basic color fills. What and how should I improve or continue.

General Discussion / Trying to get the etiquette right
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:17:36 pm »
Hey everyone, I just started posting and I wanted to make sure I'm not rude or anything so I have a quick question. Nothing really in the Faq on this. In the Pixel Art section when someone is asking for comments or critique, is it alright to ask further questions about how they created what they did? In other words the person who posted might have something I have questions about. Should I just post in that thread, or should I start a new thread with a link to their pixels and my questions?

Pixel Art / Re: Scanning line art to pixel over?
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:11:07 pm »
I found this thread here

http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=499.0

Most of the examples are exactly what I am trying to achieve. I forgot to mention, that I am very new to scanning and pixel art. I'm not sure what size to make the sketches and what steps to use to reduce the image, and when to start pixeling over it. I trying to use Gimp to scan into and Grafx2 to pixel over.

Pixel Art / Scanning line art to pixel over?
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:00:03 pm »
What would be the best way to pixel over lineart? Does anyone have a workflow they can share about? I'm using Gimp and Grafx2, but if your example is different software that's ok. If you have pics of a step by step process that would be great, or a tutorial on this. For now, the only thing I can do is post a doodle of a scan, but I haven't gotten the line width down enough yet for it to be sensible, so I'm skipping that. Trying to get a small sketch down to a 128x128 pixel constraint to pixel over is a little tough. How do you do it?

General Discussion / Gif animation software, free - open source?
« on: April 24, 2012, 04:28:07 pm »
I'm using Grafx2 for pixel art, but as most of you know, there is no Gif animation support. I would like to find a good Gif animation software that is free, open source and is basically still maintained, that I can use. Any recommendations?
