WIP - Ripley remake from Alien 3 for GB

on: September 28, 2009, 03:22:55 pm

Ok, I'm new to this forum but I'm not new to pixel art. I've always loved it and used to paint tiny pixel stuff on my Amiga back in the day. It's something I'd sit down and do from time to time. However, I'm looking too improve my self and after a small nudge from another forum I found this place. I've seen alot of good art on this page and alot of helpful comments.

I've used Arnes 16 color v.20 palette for this.

Her forehead looks too low, almost neanderthalic, or like she suffers from microcephaly.

If I were better at drawing human proportions I would be able to post an edit for you, but I tried it and wasn't able to sketch anything better.  I just know her head seems small up top (and in back).

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Some nice pixel work you've got here. I don't know if you're trying to replicate Ripley exactly, but if so she looks very much like a bald man at the moment. Aside from that, the head is very elongated and looks strange. I did an edit:

Try changing the colour of your background as you work on sprites. It will show where the sprite needs to work to make it readable. Your sprite works great on a dark background, but becomes much harder to read on a light background. So I added a number of dark outlines on the undersides of things. I also messed around with the head to what I thought looked more realistic.

Yes I agree, the head looks really weird. I was getting around to fixing that but I put it on hold. I tried some stuff but didn't get it right.

EyeCraft:
Thanks alot. Well, the sprite in the GB original doesn't show that much detail. I would like to have it look more like a woman. That will be the next step. You did a really nice edit and super fast. The original image took me about an hour to make, I'm slow :)

I do work with a transparent background but I only added the black background to have some sort of background. I agree though that I have to get better at checking the sprite with other backgrounds etc. Thanks alot for the heads up on that one.

To me, she reads like generic tough guy in both versions. The main problem I see with the face is the prominent eyebrows. I'd tone down the shading on the face as much as possible to make the facial features look softer and more feminine.

I gave her a larger forehead, smaller feet, longer legs, larger chest and changed the pose a bit. If you look at what she's wearing in the movie, it's all brownish colors, so I changed that as well. I hope that's taking it in the right direction. :)

Arachne:

That is true, "she" still looks like a bloke. The sprite(my version) reminds me a bit of Arnie or something. I love what you've done with it. You pretty much changed everything and I love it. Mind you that this was an experiment since I want to learn more about this fine art. I might check the SNES version too and see if I can get some more hints from that sprite.

The reason I posted here is as I said earlier; I want to learn and get better and with advice like this, i'm flabbergasted. Quick replies and nice edits. Thanks alot. I'm gonna do a game with a friend of mine so I really need to hone my skills.

I'm gonna continue working on this and see if I can do better than my first try.

Ok, just got home from work but I started pushing away and was inspired by both of the two edits and I checked the sprite for the SNES version of Alien 3 as well. Now, there are still alot of  things I'm unhappy about - the legs, the way she's holding her rifle including her weird arms. I'll get to that. Hopefully this edit has made her somewhat more feminene.

Oh, by the way - what does C+C mean? Critique and...?

Nice edit, Arachne!

Lynxclaw, it's an improvement I think -- I'm looking forward to seeing your version where she's holding the rifle more naturally.
