[WIP] Moai Statue for PixelJoint

on: April 06, 2009, 09:45:53 pm
So myeah, PixelJoint's contest this week is to make a Moai Statue.

Here is my WIP. Anything wrong with the shaping?

Lots of things. But those statues had some bad shaping to begin with, so post a picture of what you're trying to draw then we can see how much of the bad shaping is on your end and how much is the statue.

Here, I changed the face to get him closer to the photo. The photo is actually two different statues- I took the head I liked the most and the Body I liked the most, and joined them.

Here's a really sloppy edit.

The two biggest form issues with your piece are the nose ( which is too broad and has a shadow on the top which shouldn't be there ), and the chest which has breasts and it shouldn't.

There are a lot of other little things if you look at my edit vs yours you should spot them.

EvilEye, I don't think the goal of the piece is historical accuracy. If I understand correctly, structural differences aren't necessarily faults of the piece at all, as long as it's communicative of an "Easter Island head" symbolically.

Koi, make whatever changes you will and move forward, I say! The basic form is looking good. :y:

And posted a picture of a statue.

Even if he's not trying to follow the reference my 2 main critiques stand.

True, hence why I combined two statues- but Evil is correct in the sense I've done a lot of mistakes on the face, even if based on this faux-statue. I'm correcting those right now.
