Dump

on: March 06, 2009, 04:34:30 pm
It's been a while since I posted, so here goes my recent-ish stuff:

- Secret Santa gift for AdamAtomic

- Gift for Mirre

- Smileys for a LEGO forum (will make more eventually)

- c64 with MCol restrictions. Ptoing has been asking me to do one of these for years, so finally went for it :0
It was quite fun, though I didn't try weird things.
Aaand probably you wouldn't easily find a kabutomushi flying around during the day, but I just added it for kicks.

I consider all of these finished, but if you find something you want to point out I'll be all ears.

The first two are amazing; I especially love the pug. But I've already seen both of them over at PJ.

The only crit I can give is for, what I assume, is supposed to be a :3 emoticon. It doesn't really read as being a :3 face, it comes off more as '~', like the one to the right of it. If you weren't going for a :3 emoticon then feel free to disregard my useless comment : O. Anyway, if it was, then I made an edit to show how I think it could be improved to increase its readability:

The rest of your emoticons are great and very expressive.

The tiger is awesome.

I am really impressed with your outlining, you did that by hand right?

@ skamocore: Thanks for the edit, I'll keep it in mind when going back to the smileys.

@ EvilEye: Yup, everything was done by hand. How else? :0

Nice works, first two I see them before, but just want to say that I was truly impressed from the smiles. So clear look. I can't see "very happy" or "laughing" have one in 4 row, but not so clear to understand. Also can't easy understand "cheesy" smile and ofcource need important "green cheesy". I like them all heh.

I've seen the first two, but the c64 with MCol restrictions is great! Nice work, Panda. I wish you'd show more of your stuff around here >:(

The first two looks almost like sweet vector. Amazing. And so is the lego smiley.

But what's a c64 restriction?
Is it a restriction for a certain console? I've seen the phrase used in the forum every now and then, but never did understand.

c64 stands for commodore 46
It has the following palette (considered to be the best 16 colour palette on any console):
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/upload/features/05_arne/c64pal.png
And this contains the best explanation about the restrictions I found this quickly:
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=6672.0
It is interesting to work with, but I find it very hard to keep everything in mind manually, so perhaps I need something that applies restrictions at all time for me some day to work with it :)

Just made myself a new avatar :0
Didn't really care much about colour count, but each is used as much as possible, except perhaps the lightest blue.
But 26 colours if anyone is curious.

I like the new avatar, your style is very clean and distinctive.  Also, I'm under the impression of how well you modulate the thickness of a line, just as if it was drawn with a brush pen.  It's very oriental, calligraphic -- if I can put it in this way.

The C=64 picture is nice, though you might have put a bit more depth into it.

I am noticing the light source seems to be coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. In several places it seems there should be shadows but there are none.

Looking back at your other pictures there is the same problem in a few places.

The dark patch on the birds cheek also perplexes me. Maybe post the reference?

Sure, here are the references I used:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/khosla/83096799/

Also made up some stuff as I went just because I liked how it looked though :B
As for light sources, yeah I could pay more attention, but the lighter bits on the feathers, I think are the actual feathers having lighter colours on the ends.

Although the gradient in feather colour is certainly true, there is a bit of both going on here. I like your clean and controlled style but would love to see more detail in terms of light and texture going on some day. I think you are able to do that about as well, but would just suck up alot of time :)

While still good, this piece looks flat because of the lack of shading.

I don't know how much this helps, but I painted over your piece to show where you could go with this.

Great edit Evileye but I think it takes a bit of the feel of the piece away by giving it more depth, either way its awesome though.

I disagree that it looks half done, the piece imo stands as is.
But I do agree that you don't work much with light and shade.

@ EvilEye: Thanks for the paint over, really appreciated. I'll either rework this or make something new, but thanks for opening my eyes.

Since ptoing already challenged me to pixel something with strong lightsources, I'll eventually make that and it should be different to what I usually do.
I get to pixel plenty of varied stuff when I work, but yeah... I just end up doing what I enjoy the most when I pixel for fun.
But doing different things should definitely be interesting.
