Dance animations

on: February 17, 2009, 11:57:31 am
For the pixel joint challenge (which I started myself -_-) I want to make a few dance animations.
All featuring the same character probably (me), but doing a different dance.
I really have almost no animation experience, and I am also not an anatomy expert, so its really time for me to learn it :)

I am limited to 8 frames exactly 1/10 of a second long.

At the moment I have one little dance move, which consists of 4 frames being mirrored to get 8 frames. I do have a few non mirrored dance moves in mind too.

Please tell me what you think, as well as on animation, color, anything :)

i think you either need to decrease the amount of the lightest blue on the trousers or add a new colours..

Since, like that's what catches my eye..

And not for a good reason ]:

Yup, I noticed that myself as well, and I had already edited that too :) (just as a few other colors I changed)

But ill see what I can do about it :)
In the meanwhile, take a look on what I am working on (oh man I got way to many ideas I want to have animated -_-)

EDIT:
I don't think I am going to color it, I do not like it to much.

EDIT2:

I fixed the face now I guess.

What do you guys prefer: With or without outline?

I prefer with outline, but, maybe the line could be less darker.
My english sucks.

Without. If the outline was actually on the sprite itself (rather than just coated around) it would work better. But i would still stick to without outline.

You should probs fix the outer lines on the shoes (for the one without the black outline) so it works better with the rest of the sprite. Atm i think it looks a bit out of place.

Without.

Also,
in the first animation you made his face doesn't look the direction his hat is going and as the face is the only indicator of the head's direction it looks like his hat is bouncing around but his head/face is stationary.

And.
Make him do the robot.
Now.

Thanks for your replies! No outline it is than :)

I am finally done with all frames. I belive the coloring is quite cool now, but I am not too sure about the animation itself yet... :/

Lar, I think I understand what you mean with the shoes, but how would I change that? White on the outside does not look too good.

Shrike, I have another dance in mind ;)

Lollige, I like the upper side of the body, I can feeling he is dancing and having fun, but the legs have no sense at all for me... Do the test. Block the upper side, and see the legs, alone. They look like the hypnotic movements of soap in a bubble... Nice, but they have no sense. Do the same in the stickman... It' s even worse, actually.

I would give a new look to the legs. There is a gym machine that do the movement I would look for and matches with the movement he is doing with his arms... I can't  remember the name, but it' s simillar to this one:

But not really this one. This machine does steps, or "stairs walking". There is a machine that makes your feet move left and right, in circular movements, like when you are winning speed when skating.

So, one of the extreme movements of the guy, should look more or less like this (Very rough edit, though...)

Hope it helps...
I come here humble, trying not to repeat the mistakes of the past, for improving my art and try to help the others improving their own when I can...

I get what you mean, and I agree that his legs are not too dancy, yes.
However, when I try doing this dance myself, there is no way I can really easily involve my legs in it  :-\
Especially not twice within a second (animation speed)

New version here:

EDIT:
Man this was hard, and it is still not how I like it:

Well, most dances (if not all) are mostly about moving your feets. Arm movements are just there for the fun. Legs are your roots and moving your weight from one to the other is the very basics of any dance.

Well headbanging with leg movement would get really silly wouldn't it? :P
It's nice and smooth though. And I like that finished (?) dancer. Although his legs still look a bit glitchy.

omg that is insane. well me being me ive tried head banging and you do need a strong solid plant on the ground, so the pose that youve chosen theres a high posibility that if someone mimic-ed it, they would fall back on the up bit. maybe more of a green day i like punk rock on my guitar pose.

Yeah, I think his pants are a bit more enthousiastic in the dance than the legs itself. ill see what I can do about it.

Im going to finish that headbanger I think, but I am not to sure yet about the hair movement.. but it is probably easier to fix that later on.
Current wip:

EDIT:
New version is the second one. I think the legs are better, and also I have uppened the saturation.

Sure.

Lose a frame or just speed it up somehow when he thrusts his head down so we get the DOWN-riiiiiiiiiiiiiise-DOWN-riiiiiiiiiiiiiise-thing O:!

Either that or speed it all up, that'd also make sense!

Do you mean somewhat like this?

For the challenge I am btw limited to exact 8 frames all with a framerate of 10/100, but I am willing to not enter it if thats an improvement. However, I could of course also add a frame to the rising.

But I am not yet sure if this is an improvement, but it DOES give a certain beat feel to it!

then remake that frame into a frame that conveys more speed (thus farther into the motion than the one before) and contributes to the release of the fast ducking. Might also want to draw the hair in a way that conveys more swing!

I'm digging these sprites, you're very talented when it comes to animation, I see, so I'm looking forward to more : D

Quick stylistic note:

I know the challenge is over, but as the big red thing makes no sense to me, maybe make him wearing headphones instead?
Also, the hair is currently being treated more like a blob; put more control into each strand.

Just a thought.

Well, the red thing is a hat...and it makes sense for him to be swinging it up and down midst the headbanging...One can tell what it is when you see it next to all the other animations.
