Catbomb

on: January 25, 2009, 05:13:30 am
Alright, still pretty new at this stuff, but I think I'm making progress. I decided to color one of TakaM's linearts from the lineart thread for practice in rendering form. Also experimented with dithering and hue shifting.

So, what do you think? Too much hue shifting on the latest version? I might have gone a little crazy on it in my excitement.  :P

Oh, I'm also not sure how to get the fuse to not look like a spazzy flower.

Edit: Woops, this wasn't TakaM's lineart, it was Kerisu's! Sorry about that.  :-[

Hey Regulus,

Looking cool. There are four things I would consider, though:

Make the actual fuse white, then it looks a lot clearer what is going on up top.
Move the light source off a bit to one side. Having it directly above looks a little weird
Take down the hue shifting. I know little about colors so I can't help you much, but maybe someone else can edit or explain what to do with the colors
Maybe nix the dithering. If you are trying to give it a specific texture, then the current dithering isn't quite working. If you just want it smooth and shiny then no dithering, buit if you want it furry or rough, then you need to use dithering smartly, not just one line along the border.

It is really good that you are experimenting with colors and textures and stuff. Keep up the good work.

Tried to take what you said into account. Quick edit, going back to my previous palette (plus a gray for the fuse):

I feel that your most recent pixel that you posted is a great improvement.

Anything else I can do to improve this guy? I'm not really trying to make a finished piece out of this, I just want to use it as a learning tool, and I feel that there's more to be gathered from this.

Try some secondary ambient light gently illuminating the bottom left side.
The nose/mouth just looks like a nose, had to zoom to figure it out. The red mouth interior red is distracting.
