Xmas Ninja Girl

on: December 31, 2008, 09:02:08 am
Now that the Secret Santa is over, I thought I'd post the little Christmas themed ninja I made for Dogmeat for critique:

>>

I see a few things that bother me.... but I've been staring at it too long. C&C?

EDIT: I realized one of the main things that has been bothering me: her right thigh is almost completely obscured by the skirt. It makes her stance confusing at first glance.

Also, AUGH! The hem of the skirt is tangent to the top of her sock!! It looks awkward! I hate tangents. :ouch:

Thanks! :) I've been trying to get away from straight color ramps and practice unifying my pallet.

Great illustration.
I might just regret the lack of a reference to her ninja-ness in the "merry XMAS" text. I might be tempted to replace the "X" by a shuriken or have the "merry" written top-down "a la japanese", with a different font (either more dynamic or softer to contrast the fact that we haven't revealed she's a ninja yet)

Something puzzles me with the scarf too. It doesn't look to bend according to any natural force i can think of.

Having all of her fingers at 45 degrees is a bit repetitive and is a more symbolic  than any of her other features. Her right hand looks fine(save some dark blue on her thumb which causes it to look shorter than is natural) but you should take another look at her left, and break up the monotony. (fingers at different angles, fingers with different lengths)

I like the red and the text. I guess the best word for it is juicy, haha.

Update!

Mostly the skirt, but lots of little nitpicks all over....

Haven't gotten to the hands yet! The thumb I think will be an easy fix, but I'm not sure how I'll be able to break up the angles on the other hand... hmm.....

Areas marked in green are places I think needed some changes.

A good thing to remember about hands is that the middle finger is always the longest. Not sure how you want the scarf so I did the basic natural shape. Otherwise, looks very good!

(Perhaps a Merry Ninjmas would work?)
