I was actually behind this guy for a while, but when he says stuff like, "I am far better than Miyamoto, Itoi, Kojima, Carmack, and Wright COMBINED." I have a real hard time taking him seriously.

I'm always impressed when someone creates a game single handedly. I know first hand how hard it is to learn to program and do art. But just because he is making it alone does not mean the game will be great, even good. Cave Story proved it was possible, but it is still not the norm. I think he should release a demo. The video of the game was alright, but I could hardly tell what was going on.

"I am the GREATEST GAME DEVELOPER THAT EVER LIVED.
I am a GENIUS, and I will be around for the next 40 years- eating away at your company until it exists no longer.
I will find way after way to slowly destroy your bottom line, and your business will fail.
The name NINTENDO will be forgotten, a discarded husk like so many others.
"bob's game" will live on FOREVER."

Ok cool, guy is a nutcase (:

I haven't read a single word that he's said about his own game where he doesn't tell me how good it is or generally what I should think about it.

So I thought that 'hey guy, you've got a kinda shitty marketing sense, you'll have to get people excited by other means and THEN let the game speak for itself'

but now I realize that the guy just has a case of hubris/narcissism/not well in the head, so I guess that explains things.

I guess strict isolation is not for everybody. Also I kinda doubt Nintendo cares. Hubris indeed.

Wow, just wow.
Apart from the obvious mockering, the game donīt look to hot.
Other from the fact the game has apparantly millions of characters, I donīt really see why should it be groundbreaking as he
discribe it. Still a bit respect to him, if he worked really for the last 5 years alone on it.

Useless drama though.

I was fairly interested when I first discovered his game.

But after seeing some design choices I find to be plain bad, and his delusions of grandeur- kinda lost all interest.

I think he'll eventually give up on locking himself up/whatever and release it as freeware :sigh:

He needs to learn to sell himself as humble and get rid of annoying sound effects if he truly wants what he says he does.  :blind:

The game is sub par and his manner of addressing Nintendo is very rude. I don't know what he expects. In five years I would think he could have done a lot more in the ways of art. Art really sells a game, and his looks like rpg maker community graphics. It's much more important to make it visually pleasing than to add annoying scrolling effects or otherwise give in to feature creeping. At least in my opinion.

I applaud him for the effort but not much else.

His game seems decent, but really. I doubt Nintendo's gonna take him very serious after this.

wow. Just found out. What can you say really? I feel bad for the guy...I personally couldnt care less cause it seems to be all about walking around talking to NPCs....and I've never had any interest in that....maybe if the characters showed some extraordinary depth or charm...but they are just plentiful which in a story sense is always bad.
PS: did you notice he was the endboss? did he make the game self-referential?

Just to make conversation....TakaM, what are those design choices?

This is my 100 day challenge to Yuu, Nintendo.

I, the magnificent, omnicient Bob- legendary developer of the greatest game ever made-
hereby challenge Yuu in the First Interdimensional "bob's game" Championship!

I have had ENOUGH.
YUU JUST WON'T LISTEN!
I'm not playing around here. This isn't some kind of game.
I've spent FIVE YEARS trying to play by the rules.
I've tried going by the book, reading the manual, following the instructions - but Yuu just won't play fair, Nintendo.

This time, Yuu will play by MY rules.

It's time for a surprisingly surprising turn of events- a twisted plot twist!
By playing "bob's game," Yuu will destroy the evil, corrupted GANTENDO organization!
(EVERY TIME Yuu plays "bob's game," Bob kills a Pikachu!)

But I like Nintendo! This is terrible!
YUU MUST NOT PLAY "bob's game!"
YUU MUST DEFEAT ME!

YUU MUST BE STOPPED!
YUU CANNOT WIN!

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!
THIS SENSELESS REVENGE MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!

I ASSURE YUU- I AM VERY SERIOUS!

I'll see Yuu there on day 100, REGGIE!

It's difficult to pass judgment on something so internet-ish as this (though there is another judgment in this statement). The line between what is a honest concern and what is just an attention stunt is very blurred. I don't know if I should be worried about his wellbeing or annoyed by how he's trying to sell his product. Perhaps this sort of ambiguity is the marketing of the future. We're talking about it, other places online are talking about it and the reason is because it's not clear-cut. Perhaps the ads of the future will be incomprehensible pieces of abstract video art that confuse the viewer and at the end they have a big http://www.checkoutmyproduct.com address.

More on the point his pixel art suffers from simple faults to fix that he should come to Pixelation and get critique about :D I == happy because amongst all this internet ambiguity at least Pixelation has a very clear purpose that doesn't suffer from biting-your-own-tail syndrome.

the weirdest thing to me is that it looked like every rpgmaker game graphics stuck onto every story-driven japanese high school junk game.  cast of characters include guys like "the goths" and "the fat kids."  If the story is the ONLY part of the game, you'd better hope it's like....Oedipus.  impressive for one person but not worth developing, let alone publishing...

Cmon now, that's a little harsh, no?  It's sort of funny, but we've all made our stupid mistakes.  If it's over, let him be.  If you're poking fun for the sake of poking fun, then stop.

I myself never heard of this until now, and the project seems to have lost it's relative luster.  Nothing really to add, since I have to do school homework atm.

I don't know why this guy doesn't download XNA, pay $100 and try to get his game on XBOX. the Dishwasher guy, James Silva, got his game onto XBOX and he did everything himself. Greatest opportunity ever for indie developers to get their stuff on a real live console and here's this guy throwing a fit over the Wii.

It's DS i think.  this game would be laughed off anything but a handheld (and even on an handheld forgotten in seconds).

there are single-man dev teams out there that produce commercial games, but they need to be special.  Combat Mission, for instance, was made by one man in a basement, but it had a hybrid turn system gimmick in addition to playable graphics and an assload of realism/historicity that made it worth playing.

Just to make conversation....TakaM, what are those design choices?

Take the camera for example, you can walk all the way to the edge of it so you can't really see what's coming (which would be a major problem if the game featured any enemies or something) and you press R or something to snap the camera back to the character.. it's something that shouldn't really be an issue

...and let's not forget every day shooter on PSN and Braid on XBLA...

@ Takam - I think the term you're looking for is 'predictive scroll' - and the fact it's lacking is one of those elements that proves this is an amateur product - no disrespect to bob, but it's one of those aspects that proves he's not exactly the genius he thinks he is.

@ Shrike - There are aspects of poking fun agreed, but bob could learn a thing or two by being part of a dev team - standing by a nmisguided notion that being able to self code/art/score a product isn't necessarily one to be proud of - 5 years of this guys life has been wasted on what appears to be some kind of post pubescent 'getting back at all those fools who doubted me' fantasy that has culminated in the poor soul being ridiculed and lambasted from all quarters.

Full marks for enthusiasm, drive and passion... zero marks for implementation and approach... it strikes me that a little career guidance has gone amiss along the line - or perhaps (as many have pointed out) that he is in fact bipolar and lacking any judgement of reality... either way it's sad to see.

Couldn't agree with this more.

But to me it seems less like he's a game developer and more that his game is merely a catalyst for his attempt at Internet Fame. Compare Bob to Pixel who has no interest in celebrity, pretty private and quietly grateful that people enjoy his game so much.

No, you're right.  I was speaking to the above post, which seemed to be bashing him without any intelligent addition to the conversation.
Bob was probably just trying to get attention, I'm sure. I just feel like this should be a discussion, not a 'ahahaha hes soooo stupid look he mades crappy gaems!!!!11'.
Obviously an exaggeration.  But you get my point?

I don't think I like him based simply on the youtube videos...

Who the fuck hypes up recording himself sitting around for 30 days straight making a crappy game? I mean honestly, the video showed little more than some generic RPG character art, and a bunch of "back and forth" "back and forth" fetch gameplay. Doesn't seem fun, seems very boring and a waste of time. I'm sorry if that's a bit harsh. Being a genius is awesome, but thinking you're a genius when you fall horribly short and become pompous about it is definitely the path to destruction.

I'm usually all for people going out and making games, but not if they're going to let all of it get to their heads. I have little respect for people like Bob.

THIS GUY.

For a moment I thought it was some sort of viral marketing for a real game coming around. Something like a VN about a guy who's trying to make a game and slowly goes insane. But to hear it's real... Oh my god. There's other ways to go around situations like this. Take Cave Story for an example.

EDIT: It appears it, indeed, WAS viral marketing about a game in which the exact same thing happens: the main character goes nuts and makes a game. ...This actually makes me think even less about the game and its creator. Go you, Bob, now you're nothing but a troll.

I'm pretty sure taking it to a racial stereotype isn't accurate. Do we know if there's people acting like bob in japan? We don't follow japanese gaming websites. Also I don't think it's always a virtue to talk small like the cartoon Pixel does. You don't owe it to anyone to be like that. Of course that doesn't mean I think bob is reasonable or anything, but that dichoctomy presented in that image I think enforces a stereotype of as-undisturbed-as-possible-consumption that I don't support, so I wanted to say something.

Yeah, you're totally right about the racial stereotyping there. I must admit I completely missed the huge headline and went right for the text. And these two are extreme sides of the scale (if you can label it as such), and I've heard some people say that it's not a bad thing to have some of the traits that Bob has. The egocentric side of him annoys me too much to even slightly consider taking his side though.

Is this really a good way to advertise a game? I'm far more interested in never laying my hands on it even if it turns out to be a good game. Sure a lot of people now know of Bob and his game, but I'd wager alot of them hasn't even seen the latest happenings and still think he is a douchebag.

I have seen the latest of stuff he's put up and I indeed still think he's acting like a douchebag.

Well, that was amusing. I'd vaguely heard of him a few times but never looked it up, until now. I love his adorable little design things and quips about how smart he is. One video had an annotation explaining that, whenever you enter a building the character stays in the same spot on the screen to reduce disorientation ("How come the big teams never think of that?")

Then he runs around and you realize the character himself is all over the entire screen when just walking around normally, anyway, so why the heck does it matter??

So cute. Oh, and here's an idea... if you wanna make a game all by yourself, try to make it on a platform where you don't have to rely on other people, why don'tcha? DS games need both a kit from Nintendo, an official Nintendo license, and a publisher. A PC game needs... an Internet connection. Maybe, if he's so incredibly clever, he should've thought of that.

brb, gonna make a game all by myself.

Christ!

When I last looked on there, he said he was abducted by aliens who are helping him to destroy nintendo.  He's put a bunch of glowing shit in his office and turned out the lights and says the aliens are letting him finish his game.

He's crazy, whether he started that way or not.

I simply love how almost everyone I know either:

a) Only read the site and thinks he's crazy,
b) Actually saw the Youtube videos, and think he's a troll.

Which, both combined, demonstrates how he fails at viral marketing FOREVER.

As I said before, I don't think he's crazy or a douchebag. I think he's an idiot who doesn't know how to think things through. An idiot who, apparently, is lucky enough to have an SDK for real. Such a waste of an SDK.

Does he actually have a Nitro SDK? You don't need an official SDK to do homebrew stuff.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

With a little bit of talent and common sense it's not too hard to get Nintendo to listen. This is rediculous.

We were working on a game with Blossomsoft for DS and they considered giving us a free license, but eventually they decided we could only buy one, which was way over our budget. Close one though.

Of course, we tried official channels and marketed our game to the fullest by having it appear on Gamespot first.

You watch the last video? now hes claiming all he was doing was viral advertising for his game. it still doesnt sound like the end makes sense.....and the game looks soooo MEH. its like an rpg where he is a character that made an incredibly innovative game, except all he really did was create a subpar RPG...heh.
