Run loli-goth, run!

on: November 17, 2008, 09:59:07 am

I'm doing some falling and stopping/skidding animations for her too. Any feedback would be appreciated!

i find the way she's looking right the whole time very creepy...
i dunno if i like it or not but it really looks like shes swimming with her arms.

Oh, she wasn't supposed to be looking to the right, those were supposed to be eyelashes... but I can see how that can be interpreted that way. Oops! Might be worth fixing somehow.

I wanted a girly arms-out running style, so I figured flailing them like that would be better than a proper sprinting style arm movement.

by looking right i didn't mean the eyes, i meant the entire head, well the face at least, her head is angled but her body is pure side view
now that i look at the arms a bit it looks as though shes grabbing onto rails either side of her, i don't think its that big a problem, it just looks a bit weird.

Oh... but, don't most platform game characters look somewhat towards the camera? o_o I tried to position the whole body as though it was pointing slightly towards the camera.

well, generally they only face the camera in their idle sprites, they might be tilted a little during animations but not as much as in yours.

Great animation. Very clean style also.

Her ear is bobbing up and down a lot compared to the rest of her head. Also the knob on her left pigtail is bobbing wildly.

Great animation. Palette wise, i think it could use some slight changes: the black constrasts too much with the other colors, which have less contrast amongst them, leaving them washed out (this is most apparent on the head, and on the contrast between the dress and legs). I'd recommend either using a "subtler black", moving somewhat towards the rest of the palette (palette unification), or increase global contrast (though i think the first option is best).

Thanks for the feedback so far, I'll definitely poke around with this sprite and see if I can spruce it up.

The palette isn't settled on just yet, it will really depend on how it looks with the background. I think I might introduce a hint of colour into her dress.

Turbo, do you agree about the facing direction?

I think the looking-slightly-into-camera thing works, personally, it gives her a cute ditzy feel; "Hey look at me going lalala"

Which is cute.

Stuff that bobs do that a bit un-smoothly; for example: Her dress would greatly benefit from some delayed bobbing, think jelly fish movement, every time she takes a step it goes | |, and when she starts to put down her other feet it gradually lowers with an / \-shape. I don't have a lot of time as of lately, so whipping up an edit might not be possible right now, but maybe sometime later.

Anyways, I really like it. Just touch it up and reduce all the copy-pasted-y elements and smooth out jaggies so you have a clean sprite in the end.

Oh, and do post other animations! <3

Jad, that's really helpful advice. I'll see if I can do something with her dress. I have a wind blowing for her idle right now that ripples through the hem of the dress, and I think that sort of feedback can be effective. My next animation is a 'falling' animation, which will plume quite heavily (though I'm avoiding it lifting up, of course! o_o)

That wouldn't be a problem if she (in good loli fashion) is wearing her huge puffy bloomers : D

i have a feeling her eyes will get lost at certain angles if they are the same color as her hair

her rear foot looks like it angles down sharply on the down step

her left pointy sideburn thing gets fatter in one of the frames

the dark pink pixels near the top of her bun are not doing anything useful

Just a couple of work in progress animations. Please let me know what you think!

Very quick idle animation. I'm not happy with this, the fluttering is too fine and fast. Lacks any sort of secondary anim too.

Just put together a 4-frame fall animation.  The character will be dropping during this animation. This needs more work, and I would tween this to 8 frames once it is ready. That rear leg is pretty bad, come to think of it... o_o

Apologies for the scruffiness of these images - my work tends to start off rather messy until I'm happy with how it flows.

Is it me, or in the run animation her right arm (Closet to us) is much shorter and gets shorter, than her left? Might want to lengthen the right, or shorten the left, or both. Take whatever I say with a grain of salt.

I believe this is just foreshortening.

I really like the running animation, especialy how her arms move (sort of clawing the air like a kid does). I'm not so keen on her face though, mainly the red eyes. Although i don't know what kind of character this is or how she'll be used, perhaps you could give us some info about her? Anyway very cute, keep it up.

Sokota, yeah that's just foreshortening. I can see how that might be misread however.

Larwick, I don't really have a story for this character or anything. She's in a game where she has to get to the bottom of a tower, and perhaps pick up cute cakes and diamonds (the love of every loligoth).  I agree her face could use a bit more work to be honest, as it's a bit wide and perhaps it would benefit from facing forwards by a pixel or two.

How does the falling animation look so far?

I actually think the face is pretty good. She looks gleefully oblivious, even when she's falling. I got a kick out of that. I would say make her look down when she falls, but I think that would detract from what makes the sprite cute.

Id like to see the game when there is a working copy, or just more art as you make it. Keep up the good work.

NaCl, cheers for the feedback. I might turn the face down a bit, now that you mention it, especially as the game has a strong emphasis on moving downwards.

Working on a jump animation at the moment. I hate not knowing what frame the jump will start on (unless you're doing flashback/prince of persia style stuff). It generally looks fine in game, but from an animation point of view it feels very wrong.

Looking good. Much better than my measly animation skills! And, foreshortening? :-\ Nevermind, mind as well go to Google it. Then Wikipedia it. The list goes on.

I really like her, lovely style, nice animation!

Did you create this just for fun or for a game project? If that's the case, I'd love to see the game as well.

There is something that bothers me about the falling sprite, but I don't know what.

What I can say however, is I love the style, and the running animation is great.

For the falling animation, before I read the text of the post, I thought it was walking on a beam, or a tight rope or something.
