Problem with platformer ladders

Hi,
I am trying to paint some platforms connected by ladders using Arne's 16 color palette.
But I have trouble with the ladders. Either they become too heavy or else they dont really stand out (or just plain suck).
Do you have any suggestions?

I think they're fine. I like them both, though I prefer the right one.
Have you made any characters yet? Might make it easier to judge which size is right (and what to change).

This looks readable when zoomed but so so at 100% size.

Hi
Thanks for your comments. I will try to make a larger mockup with more game elements and see how they fit in.

Hi
Here is a mockup with slightly modified ladders.
Rescue the cows before they get zap'ed by the aliens.

Do you have to use ladders? Maybe try a rope instead? Or something that'd fit the setting?
