Pixel Shrimp Volume 3

on: May 09, 2008, 08:02:21 am
I finally managed to pixelate something that actually looks like pixelart :)
Maybe a few of you still remember my first and second try.

http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=3502.0
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5573.0

I have improved a little since then. I spent almost 20 hours or so -_-. I'm quite happy it turned out that well :) :) :)

This is really cool!

The way you have done with the x2 pixels down at the face is an awesome idea
However, you see the right claw but not the right legs and maby some antennas too would be nice..
It looks a little like an "alienshrip" at the moment, but maby thats what you want...

one more thing, the a.a on the 2 backlegs is a bit wierd and the last one is to long, you should take away some of it and make it
sharper cos' the body at that point is not x2 pixels...

This is a great progress after what I saw at your first try!

Good luck and keep on with your style!

Great improvement from before!!! Yes, what's mostly wrong (that I can see anyway  :-\ ) is  the AA on the back legs and the front claw (mostly its left) doesn't work well with teh x2 pixel technique you used on its mouth (which was a good idea btw). Also, it's tail is looking a bit "bubbly" at the moment, and it doesn't really look like it has an exoskeleton back there.

First of all, thanks for your critics! The 2x effect of the antenna was not intended at first, but then I decided to keep it how it is because I also like that "effect".

used the crab at http://leslierich.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/files/2007/08/beach-08182007-crab.jpg
as reference for my shrimp's left scissors.

I will add more aa to it's body, pixel some antenna, repixel his legs and add another 3 legs on the other side when I got time.
The greatest problem I have is the shrimp's tail. I couldn't add shadows to it because i dont know how it looks right (I have no reference).
That was also my problem with the first one.
help would be much appreciated. :).

Ok this is what I got so far. I think the body looks better like this:

But I can't figure out where the second row of legs should be.

I start understanding how the shadows behave on an object and I'm really in love with pixelart right now. :)

That's looking pretty good. You've come quite a long way. The shrimp's head looks quite nice, but the body could use some of the contrast that the head has. The white dithered areas are too harsh in my opinion, and they could do with a buffer shade between them.

This is vuckin sweet. The only thing I see is a slight awkwardness in the limbs, do you have references? I'd love to see this get all surreal, mangled twisted long legs or some stuff, I dont know. Your pistons are firing, more please. You're talented, nurture it.

Why is the shading on the tail in the newest version worse then the 2nd newest? ???

Also, I love the limbs as they are, personally.

Thank you very much! :) I don't know if you should call it talent because I always remove some pixels here and add some pixels there not knowing what it will be looking like ^^
But I sure made some improvements though my "shading" is very basic.
I had a reference when I started working on the small one (x1 size) but I think I deleted it
Here you can see some pictures of what those shrimps look like :). I didn't color it white because i found it boring somehow.
The limbs and the scissors should be smaller and transparent also but I dont know how to create that effect and it's hard to find good reference pictures of them, because they are only like 2 cm tall and you need a very good/expensive camera to catch them.

because I spent a lot of time on the head
and I didnt like the look of it so I decided to repixel it (again... ;D)

Ah you posed it a bit, like the way its done, as well as your efforts so far =) Now I think the highlight on the 'bulk' before the head is a bit too strong, as well as it being too saturated. Perhaps you should consider another brightest colour than white, so it is also usual on the rest of the body.

The light you added conflicts its light source. Scale's light scource is coming from behind it.

Your lighting has been improved on the overall, but I actually mend the head itself, I misunderstood the shrimps anatomy haha. So what I mend was the part with the more red mark on it, which contains the brains and whatnot.
Furtherm you should remove the hars black lines on the 'inside' of the body, as well as remove the shade below him - it is distracting and not made to be finished yet, and therefore out of place.

About your further changes: It looks like the lightbulb in the image only affects the head and the first 'bulk', but the rest of the body seems to be affected by a lightsource coming from the other side.

OK after studying this picture

and 3 hours of practice i finally understood how to antialias properly. I hope that picture helps other newbies too :)

I traced my shrimp to get the outlines (left picture) and and understood how important it is to start with clean outlines without colors

looking forward to finish my Shrimp and animate it to a later time:D
gtg to sleep right now ^^

btw
were can I set my avatar? couldnīt find the location
thx

I think you got carried away by the pleasure of what you just learned ;)
You are overdoing it. And, above all, you are basically wasting time: anti-aliasing is part of the polish phase - first shade/colour, then add details, then do AA.

ndrake, I'm only posting just to say that I think it's weird that you are a guy who only ever draws shrimp, just, it weirds me out. But you're making all kinds of progress on pixelling, so it seems to work pretty well for you. Good work, anyways, is what I think I mean.

I anti alias as I go along with the shading Saimo, everyone has their own working method, but if you anti alias before you set colour, your anti alias will have incorrect values, and if you anti alias before you set shades, your anti alias may turn out too bright in dark areas, and if you anti alias before you set details, you may need to spend more time to get the details in. I myself do it before the fine details and texture, simply because I then get a better idea of how to put in the detail I want. That's just personal though.

In the front the white area of the eyes is absolutely too big. On the sides, you didn't add the tail (or did it incorrectly), while at the front you did. Further, when making a rotating animation, keep the sprite in the center of the image. It should rotate around its center axis, not its snout ;)

There's nothing wrong with only drawing shrimp. I only draw naked women, and no one seems to have a problem with that.

Plus, there's something charming about the whole shrimp thing.

The first frame is not just outline, the rest is, that's the error. In an animation, all frames should have equal detail.

Ok I removed the "Dots" and "Shades" from the side picture and added a fourth frame. But there's still some issues that i can't figure out. The eyes maybe or x axis?

This is what I got so far

Should I add a fifth frame?

I think it will be a torture to color so many frames :D

What's the big wobble, you may need to swap the body's of 2 frames (so not the anti aliassed parts, these move along fine).

Um, I can see what you mean by jellish, and I do agree that a shrimp should give off an organic feel, but I honestly don't feel like that's what this particular wobble projects. It comes across more as an inconsistency in its shape than deformation of it... like you took several pictures of a shrimp at different locations and tried to make an animation out of it, if you understand what I mean... It's a strange unnatural twitch.. Its face also seems to strangely extend...
