Forest Minesweeper Mockup

on: January 07, 2008, 05:06:20 pm
I wanted to re-invent the old windows minesweeper game with a theme of sorts...

i also wanted to give it little bit of kenneth-fejer style/feel...

this has probably taken about 3 hours so far... and i plan to make a few more screens (eg.. gameover, start screen and maybe another level with a different theme :) )

EDIT: oh yeah its supposed to be for mobile phones...

Nice. I like it better than the new Vista version, which although updated is still rather boring.

The only thing that bugs me is the girl. She just looks rather plain so far... maybe give her a little more oomph?

I've been busy with other art projects which deviated me away from pixel art alot. But I'm slowly getting back on the wagon again.  :)

It's nice to know that people have noticed I've been gone. ^_^

I have deleted a few of your posts since your comeback, and the ones in this thread would go if feron hadn't replied to them already. You seem to have been gone enough time to not remember that you should post when you have constructive criticism, not just to post. Please rectify. If you need to talk this over, send me a PM, not in this thread, thanks.

Carrying on with critique:

This is pretty solid. My biggest crit is what is that face doing there? Is it useful, game-wise? Do you need an anime girl there? If you need a character a grizzled mine-sweeper soldier would fit better perhaps? Anything than generic anime girl?

my only issue is the grid lines.  they are SO GREAT in the sunlight, but in the shade, what the hell?  little flashes of bright green?

OT: doesn't GREAT look so weird in all caps? i thought for i while i'd spelled it wrong, but no, it's just strange....

The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Indeed the anime girl is very generic, however would a soldier really fit with the "cute" style of this?  Game wise, my idea was that they would provide comments like "Time is running out!", and maybe give hints.  And if you hit a mine then the portrait becomes dead or something, i just felt it made it slightly different from the norm.

Adarias:  thanks for pointing them out, i think i changed the color of grass to shade color but missed the grid lines on some colors, i'll change them in the next update.

Wip of a game select screen:

Heehee, love that octopus.
I think a more modern rendition of the 'spaceman' would be more appropriate, though. You know, spherical helmet, white spacesuit.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

My crit is that all the greens have low contrast. The border should be darker than the board. The darkened fields should be easier to tell apart from the light ones. Cellphones have mostly lousy contrast so you should make sure everything stands out really well.

I still think you should add a little something to the woman. Everything else is clearly themed, cowboy-desert, octopus-sea... but woman-forest? She looks so generic. Maybe add a leaf to her hair to make her a nymph or make her a jungle girl or put a flower in her hair to make her a hippie or anything that links her to the theme of her board.

Yeah, I was enjoying the nymph look on the girl too. But then came the cowboy and the octopus(?) and she seem to be out of place, all of the sudden.
I feel a slight lack of cohesion when I look at the character choices. It's like in that game: "which one of these is not an animal?" and then there is a cork lying in the middle of the zoo, except that in this case, each character takes me to one different group of sensations. I think since mine-sweeper is a casual game of sorts, I think a clearer relation between the characters should work better (like you did with the basic themes. Forest, Desert, Sea. Green, Yellowish, Blue. Perfect!).

Suggestions:

A: Fantasy
1. Forest - nymphy girl. Pointy ears, wings, crown of flowers (leaves)
2. Desert - maybe a little red sand daemon. Snake/lizard resemblance, wearing sand-colored rags (Tuareg feel).
3. Sea - a little sea man with fins for ears and fish "lips".

B: Animals
Tons of options! Would look lovely if all looked like your cute octopus.

C: Heroes(or)Villains (couldn't come up with better examples, sorry)
1. Jungle boy (Tarzan style!)/pollution dude(environmental cliché villain)
2. Cowboy/Bank robber
3. Sailor (Popeye!)/Pirate (Har!)

D: War themed (relates well to mines)
1. Army - leaf camouflage
2. Army - desert camouflage
3. Navy

Did you know that an anagram of Forest Minesweeper Mockups is "Feron Weeps Sometimes, Puckr."?

But anyway,
I think, just like the original minesweeper, different numbers should have different colors.  I've associated the numbers with the colors so much on the original that it actually helps me read the numbers more quickly.
