I don't know what I was doing with colors...and I wasn't sure if you were going for a more real or a more anime style, but here's an edit.
The basic things you should remember is that:
-hair is effected by gravity...you kinda want to show that its being pulled down, because for the most part, hair hangs, it doesn't poof (of course this all depends on the hair type, but in general)
-hair (well anime hair for the most part) comes in 'chunks' that you can generalize...the method I used was just to treat each chunk as its own little object...give each chunk proper shading and highlighting
-hair has strands (real hair more than anime hair) I tried to show this by adding some stray lines here and there...a few 'strays' along the edge of the hair can do wonders.
-I don't know where I was going with the color...real and anime hair though has colors than you normally first see...with the exception of flat-dyed black I guess. But even plain brown hair has lots of colors.
The best advice I can offer though, is to do a google image search on
'emo hair' or
'dyed hair', especially if you are going for an anime look.
Good luck though...hope this is helpful.
