Monster Hatcher: Redux

on: October 02, 2007, 02:06:17 am
If non-moderator challenges and activities don't actually go in the general thread, then lock this baby up; but if they do, I think we're all in for a good deal of fun.

Back in the day, I started a highly successful thread at Pixel Joint, called Creature hatch-athon. I think to this day, it's the longest thread(correct me if I'm wrong). The basic concept was to make pixel eggs, and wait for others to "hatch" them by making matching pixellated monsters- and likewise hatching others' eggs. It's like opening your christmas presents over and over! It's one big circle jerk. It's awsome.

I have some new rules, to make things more interesting. When creating your pixel egg, create a border around it, and show the colors you use. The hatcher of the egg must use colors from the egg palate, and fill up at least half of the bordered area. The border doesn't need to be square, in fact, it could be shaped like a tetris piece, or any fairly blocky polygonal shape(tetrahedon, hexagon). It's a fun way of manipulating the outcome of your creature.

Here's an example of the process:
                                                 Magenta Egg  Red Puddodon

PS: Don't worry if somebody hatches the same egg you do on accident, sometimes it's fun seeing different takes. But if you know an egg is taken, then move on and take another one.

love.

i would totally enjoy a thing like this if the canvas were slightly smaller, say around 64x64.  larger images it's harder to be both attractive and timely.

Jad and TBOB, absolutely brilliant stuff. Bob, you seem to have left the start of the face (or at least some white marks) in a few frames, and it doesn't run as smoothly as it should.

Anyway i made an egg. I should probably have made a monster instead but i'm tired so..  :sigh:

Draw in pink area, palette is everything but.

The border doesn't need to be square, in fact, it could be shaped like a tetris piece, or any fairly blocky polygonal shape(tetrahedon, hexagon). It's a fun way of manipulating the outcome of your creature.

Haha, you kind of ruined your own point there, not staying inside the border and all O: I kind of felt that was the point :O

A wonderful creature, though :3

By the way:

Hey king, how's ruling the universe? Not so fun? .. I could guess that by the look of your face.

Lots of flawed AA in this one, but hey, i'm still learning :O

You know, I wasn't even thinking when I made that monster. Still, one could argue that it isn't necessarily going against the rules, as it's only drawn in the box, and not outside.
I do prefer to see the whole monster though, no more like that for me. I like your monster too, you had a big ol' crutch there with only three colors! He has a lot of personality.

@Xion You're right! :)

@Darien: Correction - Philip (oliver) drew the original - I merely updated him on some of the later zx games... with added expressions and new anims for gameplay purposes.

I was actually asked very recently, "I wonder what dizzy hatches into" - which is food for thought...

indy scene?  ::)
The Olliver twins were pretty indy. Weren't they making and publishing games out of their bedroom when they were thirteen, or something?

While I'm here...

Are people still doing these? People should totally still be doing these.

I suppose we were - it's just weird being attached to a scene retrospectivley when all it was to me was a job... a cool job - but a job nonetheless. I guess that's my age and cynicism coming through there. :D

Philip and Andrew did indeed create alot of stuff in their home for a while - I suppose I did too with my brother but we quickly moved to offices when things began to take off. You had to, there's only so many you can squeeze into a bedroom after all.

NEway... enough of that... back OT.

now you do a thing

activity: take something thats already been done but do it again and better
activity: take any evolution and extend it, add a third pokemon to the thing
activity: find jad and convince him to be a mod on here

as you can see i was right about photobucket versus imageshack. ive been right about a lot of things for a long time.
