Ninpou: pikuseru-no-jutsu

on: September 27, 2007, 01:53:09 am
Ninja Arts: Means of the pixel

I have always awed at the actioned pack dynamics stuffed into tiny avatars of greatness, sprites always captured my attention. I love just to stare at countless sprite sheets, and playing those 2d MMMO's just to get my satisfaction of looking as these awesomely drawn characters. So I simply thought to myself how cool it would be to make my own! I've been an art nerd since i was born, 15 years of a pencil glued to my hands, because if this, I didn't think i was too out of place to try pixel art. I search around and it wasent too long before i found this forum. I see A LOT of talent around here. I figure it's the best place for me to get help and start off.

Before I start off asking and asking like the newb I am. Just wanted to say hi to all the members of the forums. erm..ok...time fer questions:

How should i start?
What should I be doing?
Tablet or mouse?
What should I know?

Welcome to the forums.

How should i start?

Start by reading the FAQ and looking at the forums. There's a introductions thread for this kind of thing.

What should I be doing?

Looking at tutorials, studying professional pixel work, asking questions, and most of all practicing. I recommend you start with Tsugumo's tutorial. Look in the Tools, Resources and Linkage thread. The Recorded Pixel Art thread is also worth it's weight in gold.

Tablet or mouse?

This has been discussed a couple of times. Try searching for the relevant thread.

What should I know?

Follow the above steps and learn as much as your brain can handle. Ignorance is a sin.

i suggest following all of the tutorial and resource links
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

i suggest IDraw3 and many will suggest ProMotion, both of which have a learning curve where the basics are obvious, and the true potential is harder to see but amazing.

MS paint is good for all your basic needs, but the true potential is at face value.

I dinna' recommend MSPaint. Terrible pallete management, and the bells and whistles of the more advanced programs are mighty fine (custom grid comes to mind).
I personally use GraphicsGale. The free version's only missing feature is animation, and it's a good inbetween point for MSPaint and the super-advanced ones like Pro-Motion.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

All info gathered here can be found in the faq and the resources thread. Lock'd!
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.
