Here i made the colors lighter. And it needs a more defined light source.

You had too many colors, mine's a tad extreme with color conservation but it's a good example of what I'm trying to say. Defined the light source a bit more aswell and added more contrast.

I still like the original best, to be honest.  I don't think the skintones should be "lightened", I think you should lower their saturation.  Your greys are too close in value, and too numerous.  You're going to want a lot of contrast and definition in a piece this small.

I have redonne colors on you monkey, so for it, i'm using in a cartoonish style, a few colors -> five for skin (you could reduce to 4, it's working too), and 4 for fur with not the same colors range to make difference between skin and fur
