Happy Bird [wip]

on: June 28, 2007, 06:04:02 pm

Yes I know birds have beaks and no teeth but I don't care  :P

I'm obviously going for a cartoony look and I was wondering if my shading is ok the way it is going right now?

C&C please  :)

I think you can put teeth AND beak, because your work don't look like a bird :/

I'm not getting the shading of the head.  The edge of the shadow should curve the opposite direction of what is currently going on.  Otherwise it looks like his skull has caved in, or he has some sort of oil stain going on.

How about some more feathers, perhaps around the head, to reinforce the bird-ness?

It just doesn't look like a bird.

Not only the beak, but the wings. Shouldn't the wings be on his side? Here, it looks like they're flopped in front of him.
"Baboy" is Filipino for pig.

At first I thought it was a man with bandages around his head..
the middle line that seperates the teeth should be bend a bit.
The beak doesn't look like a beak, the top part looks like a nose and the bottom part doesn't look like anything. I think it would be best to make the beak a bit wider.

Hi there,

Grinning birds! I love grinning birds, I wonder why they are not used more in cartoons.

I think the current problems here is that there are not enough details that indicate us it is a bird, despite being cartoony.

The first noticeable thing is the lack of a beak, or assumptiosn of it. There needs to be more sorrounding the teeth, even if it is just a little orange here and there so it is kind of implied.

Overall anatomy, many common birds have "fat" bodies (I quote it, because -more often than not- it is just an illussion given by the feathers) and narrow heads, and short legs and long feet.

About shading, there is a lack of a clear light source on the body, while on the head it comes from the top left (from our perspective). I think the colors need a little changes, but I'll let someone more educated on the field explain about it (or point out to arne's art tutorial).

I did a quick dirty job addressing those points, inspired for the most part by Squit from the Goodfeathers. I apologize if it strayed too far from what your intention of depicting is:

Yours  -  edit

Thanks. That palette was one from Alucard's edit, I don't think I used many colors there, and I was too lazy to remove it :P

I just arranged the pallette like that because it was fun.  :P

I've been poking around trying to make it bird like but still keep what I more or less have now but have not had too much luck.

I will keep on trying and if not drop the bird status and just dub it as a new species!

Choosing between making it look like a bird or changing its form is a comprimise you have to take. At is current state, there are very little things indicating use that what we see is actually a bird.

Despite being apparently just a joke, I'd usggest not to redub it as a new species, for you still need a layer of associativity(?) for it to be believable in a way.

I'd suggest to forget about the teeth and make the smile with the beak alone. Something like this maybe: http://www.vogy.ch/FILE/tux.jpg

Maybe try lengthening the wings, too, so they look less like arms. Make the follow the contour of the body, also.

i think it has a cool style :) Id say maybe try to make a little of the orange from the beak fall off to the sides, maybe that can help give it a more "mouthy" look. I dont agree with Alevice, the edit changed the style too much, and its not cute imo. I would work the shading as well a bit more ;) Oh, and i surely dont agree with Zero about leaving the peak alone.

Hope to see more updates.  :y:
