hello, Im Lord Ash

on: July 21, 2008, 12:09:12 am
you may know me from TIG, or elsewhere about the net. I usually go by the name ash, Lord Ash, or Lord Midnight. My nom-de-plume is : Lord Ash Midnight, catchy and pretentious huh :)

so I am a game designer, and I am working on some small games. I love the work I see around here, and I recognize many names from about the web. I read the general rules, I'll peruse the faqs shortly. I can draw with pencil ok on paper, but I am horrible at pixeling. the work I see here is stellar and fantastic. I know it is well beyond my reach, I just don't have the time to get that good, too many things on my plate as it is. I use some animation software to create my images from 3D models, aka prerendered sprites. That seems to be an evil people despise me for. Nonetheless, it is something I am comfortable with, and it does have its own set of problems.

I am working on a couple of small games, and I am finding that it is kinda fun to pixel some simple things. it is primitive and low level, but I am having fun. I would like to get a little better at pixeling, I'm sure that the techniques involved will help me in my other disciplines. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself, I happy to become a part of the greatest pixel forum I have ever found. I look forward to learning from you, and with you.

this is scaled up to 16x16 instead of 8x8, but its still correct, just bigger :)

it is being used in a little project, I will post later. Its mostly just so I can practice code, but it brings back a lot of memories. I have a neat little program called 'musagi' that makes chiptunes, and I was inspired to make a little nesformer in 8-bit glory. mind you I strayed from the nes specs, Im going with 320x240, which is pretty close I guess, and I'm using an overall palette instead of 2x2 tile bricks, but its close enough for me, and close enough to capture the 'feel' of the 8-bit days :)

anyway, that is kinda my first attempt to pixel anything, I'm sure its pretty atrocious. A bit about me as a person, I'm 30, went back to college a couple years ago, married and Im a dad. I hope to someday make a living from games, even if it's just a modest one.

I do have a couple of things I could use help in making, a couple of tiles for this, a stone tile, and a few odds n ends. I'll post my progress as I go, any pointers along the way would be great. I'll probably return to using procedural software to generate tiles at some point, its much faster and works fine for my needs, but I'd like to explore pixeling a bit, if for nothing else than to broaden my horizons.

well, talk to you guys later, cheers !

oh, um, a bit of both I guess. I looked around for the introduction thread for a minute or two, but didn't see it till after I had posted :( Im sorry if this causes some undo harm or difficulty. You run final redemption I see. beautiful site with wonderful artwork. If I had the money to hire you, and a number of other members here, I would do so in a heartbeat.
