Yes, the game will always have a fairly dark background (at times it flashes brighter, but only for a moment). However, these are drawn to the screen as PNGs with semi-transparency, so they will alias with whatever is behind them.
I agree that more color variance is needed and that some are a bit blurry; we now plan to re-do most of them at a larger size, keeping the basic designs for most of them, but re-drawing them.
