CC Challenge - Dodonpachi Assembly Line

on: June 05, 2007, 12:17:51 am
The idea here is to analyse the style of the enemies and then make your own tank or ship in this style as good as you can :)

Here some enemies

And here two which i found stuck out a bit, esp the plane.

Nice designs. Its a bit late for me, so ill be checking this out tomorrow. Some things I noticed to get this rolling.

1) modest hue shift. more like no hue shift actually
2) modest use of grey metallics. usually used as small decoration and to show weaponry
3) high contrast stripe patterns. in 90 or 45 degree angles only(except for angled edges)
4) details galore. I leave this for the next person, maybe we can spot some standard design elements?
5) outlines forbidden
6) eyeball/jewel target areas
7) theres a range of values used that i haven't quite figured out, but i think it key to the style. The red ship at the very bottom has a narrower range of values and I think this is why it sticks out. Almsot all have a full value white as a highlight or stripe which i think is important to the style. I'm not sure if there's a 000 black, but if there is it's used sparingly.

I also notice that there dont appear to be many 90 degree corners. Also important I think to note how highlights are used on the points where the ship angles.

MAybe someone could put together some palettes for a couple of these ships so we can look at the contrast of each shade

These designs are hot. Good night.

Here's a few of the color tables I grabbed for 3 of the ships, including the odd red one, which is at the top. ground1 is the orange vehichle in the middle, and boss2 is the green tank below that. Another thing I noticed is the depth shading on the geometric shapes as they proceed down (away from the top layer). The shapes on top are a bit lighter, and get darker, for the mast part. This can readily bee seen on ground5, second from the left, third row down.

HAHA, those still have the c64 colours in there because I saved them in PS and was doing something with a C64 swatch beforehand.

Those colourtables are pretty useless without sorting them first I think.

Aaaanyway.

I made these like a year ago for a project that never took off :B
Will do some new ones soon.

Well, tried my hand at it too. Also my first piece of pixelart in photoshop, any of you people who use photoshop for this have a special kind of setup in photoshop for pixelling cause with all those AA tools its kinda odd :).

I think it turned out ok, but the style imitation is still kinda lacking.

4) details galore. I leave this for the next person, maybe we can spot some standard design elements.

An ass load of divets, rivets, blocky armor, holes, protrusions, and various other elements. The idea is futuristic but bulky. A good example of this is Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 range of miniatures.

Take a look at this tank:

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/spacemarines/catalog/spacemarines/images/SMRNLandRaider_large.gif

A lot of the same elements. Blocky, yet futuristic. Very extreme edge highlights with very dark crevices and shadows.

Another example:

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/tau/catalog/images/battlesuit_cdr.gif

The details seem to serve no other purpose other than just looking really cool. Almost all of the vehicles are completely mirrored.

Cool challenge here. Man, I should really post more often here.
I found imitating this style not that difficult (it`s surprise me,
most of the time I really had a hard time imitating a specific style).

That Basically all Ships and Tanks are mirrored plus
the lighting is always comming from top helps alot when you want create stuff in
a short of time.

On a side note. I always wonder if the Designers had the many details planned
befor they start to draw, or if they simply start to draw.
I mean, all vehicles have so much random stuff smashed on their surfaces.

very nice vierbit. one little thing you could improve is making the bits that are frontal darker. Your ship has less surface definition than the ones in ddp.

Yeah, that's pretty neat Vierbit. I'm with Ptoing though. And I'd like to add that it seems too "cold" to resemble the style. The sprites from DDP seem to use much warmer, hihg satured colours.

OK update Time.
-changed shading in that way, that lower parts going darker
-also Colors are now more saturated
-some design changes, esp. middle part

@ptoing
I know what you mean,
and after compared the orginals with my one
it really looked a little flat.

I like Helm's composition in this case more than the original. It stands a lot stronger, with a lot more depth. I can instantly see what it is, in contrast with DDP ships...

Gas's and Helms are pretty spot-on, except for the use of smooth ramps, which are present mostly in Gas's. One thing to note on helms is how where the edges of two defined surfaces meet, there is actually a third color, making the edge appear less harsh, whereas in the DDP sprites, the edges of two surface's highlights almost never converge to make a third color.

They both do look amazing, nevertheless.

Vierbit: The design is really close. I think you should put some shadow underneath the two engines above, something like that little red/pinkish ship in the examples. Also the grey metallics in your ship have too much saturation.

Gas13: Like others have stated, theres too much AA and smoothing in your ship also the design is abit different and passive compared to the donpachi ships (more jagged, pointy, rectangles). I like how the holds together though, it has an organic feel to it which is great.

Helm: Your advanced use of colors is too much for the donpachi style. Theres also too much outlining, but as a Helm piece it is still beautiful.

Heres my shot at it. I made a tank since everyone made planes. :p

Thanks Presley,

On my way to readjusting the colors I also noticed that the lighting didn't flow right from top the bottom like the DDP sprites do also parts of the tank were too segmented.

Heres an update.

Makes perfect sense. I'm sure theres more of that going on; I'll have a look... didn't really take the height of the sections into consideration. I just built the tank up by making large base shapes then added or trimmed pieces to get that result.

Edit: Fixed

I don't really think it's an edit though he did make it too similar to really be an original ship. Why not come up with something a bit more original Chicken. Take your time and have some fun with some new designs.

It's definatly not an edit Lollige, just look at the lines and everything. But it was heavily referenced (is that allowed?). I realized this when I was almost done with it, but finished everything to get a little feel for the teqnique. Now I'm starting another shiip and am not using any specific ship as a heavy reference. You may not think my previous ship original, and it really isn't, but as I said before I just wanted a feel. If that is not a good way to do it, please tell me.

You rock too hard for your own good snake. Very, VERY excellent.
Matches the style the best of all made so far in my opinion.

Almost there I would say, contrast between up and forward facing planes is a bit too low. Very awesome tho.  :y:

Huzba: Oh, you got it finished! That's pretty awesome, I couldn't tell it were not an official sprite if I didn't know. The minitank is a funky detail.. kind of nice to have a meaningful detail among the less meaningful details that are there just for the sake of looking good. The orange has kind of industrial feel to it.

Goodjob everyone! No one's animating these? :P

Anyway, my observation would be: lots of flatshaded and blocky surfaces. For example Liksmaskaren's piece, although I think his needs an intermediate tone added.

Even though the style doesn't match perfectly, I really LOVE Helm's.

Took a bit too much liberty with this one, I'll admit, and I now noticed there's a few perspective issues.
Some parts may look familiar since I looked at the biggest ships Helm/Ptoing/Whomever posted and drew some detail tactics and inspiration from there.

Mine's not really that interesting now that I've done it. Boo! Good fun though, it's an excellent-looking game so anything that commemorates it is A-OK in my book.

Snake's tank has this one pretty wrapped up. Looks hard as nails too, wurgh!

Had to give this one a try :D

Thought I'd also try and make a tank of sorts. It turned out to be a slightly more tedious task with all those tiny details.

I have a feeling I've missed the point here, though

They were supposed to be further behind rather than above, but I see how that can be confusing. Here's an edit where I've leveled the wheels, and I also tried to make the middle section larger so that it would seem less like three separate units. :)

I sort of figured that may have been the intention, but I think what was confusing the image was the way the guns (I assume those round metallic thingies are guns?) were set. The guns closest to the treads look like they should be sitting on top of the central portion, and the tread sections appeared to follow their vertical height, hence the confusion. :) New one nixes the confusion, but now the construction seems at odds with DDP's style (horizontally elongated, as opposed to chunky, or vertically elongated).

The techy bits look awesome though.

That is truly amazing! I haven't seen anything like that in quite a long time...

Lovely, Sohei. My new favourite of the tanks. I wouldn't call it truest to the style, but I prefer the changes you made. The form is clearer and I like the AA you've added. It's still crisp and you've preserved the sharp angles. Only part I don't like is the gun coming from under the tank. Looks separate from the other parts of the tank. Almost looks plasticky. If the blank space doesn't look odd, I'd like to see how it looks removed. If it does look odd removed, the main problem to me is that you didn't use the same highlights as on the other parts of the tank(I guess to suggest depth or maybe its in the shadows) so the lower range of values makes it look flat compared to the higher range used in the rest of the tank.

That sounds like an extremely unprofessional way to make a game (what with aesthetic consistency, art design and so on) and Pixelation is not here to provide you with sprites. If you want to hire one or more of the pixel artists showcasing their work in this thread, feel free to PM them with your offers. However the activity here is for its own sake and it will not be confused with 'Lysekoid's artist recruitment pool'.

okay.. here we go.. so I'm back to pixel art. although noone probably remembers me. used to go by the nick "zeron" when I was lurking this board ages ago.
glad to see it's back up! totally forgot about pixel art when pixelation went down.

anyway, what I used to do you see as my avatar so this was quite a challenge for me. thanks a lot arachne for posting your lineart. helped me out a lot.

this took me all day in school (approx. 5 hours):

I don't think I really nailed the style but I'm quite pleased that I was able to pull something like this off.

Okay, umm, I have been coming here to admire other people's artwork for a really long time.
I never really did any pixel pushing myself, but I have played around with some game stuff.

I thought...well...I'd give this a shot as my first submission. I'd ask for critiques and suggestions but chances are I'd probably fail to understand, or be unable to implement any suggestions. This uses 29 colors.

ummm...
SF2 could have meant  a lot of different things.
and the last arcade game I played  with any regularity was defender. I am old.

I don't remember thunderhawk being from the original street fighter 2. I thought he wasn't introduced until later versions.
chunli, Dahlsim, blanka, hondo, ken, ryu, the dude with the haircut, the three bad guys...
I don't think he came along till later versions, gold or something. Same time as Cammy

OK my mistake... SSF2 - and if you wanna be really pedantic... 'the new challengers' - included - thawk, cammy, Fei long and Deejay... enough already... back OT.

I think the reason why your ship reminds me so much of T.hawk... is that it it looks like a Thunder bird... from the Native American myths... it's got a certain totem pole ness to it...

Don't think i followed the style properly. This is too fat to be a ship really. I like it though.  :B

Large auto gun

Based on the large auto gun from homeworld... looks kinda bland now that I see it next to all the other entries... not enough details?

well to give credit, i knew what it was well before reading your words.  and i hated that level if for no other reason than the fact that it took so long; you either had to make (and lose) a bajillion corvettes or wait for a cloaking ship to escort your frigates and destroyers.  lame!
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Well, this is my attempt...  I like the design (altho a little small) but the details are lacking and are of poorer quality... I'll just call this a learning experience for me.

I'de also like to note I made a rocket once with the inverted wings shown on this ship. The rocket when launched, proceeded to flip over and over until it finally caught on fire and burned on its descent back to earth.

<Xion> I can't see it why can't I see it

I'm working on building a tank around the palette used by the second boss (the big green tank). Right now, I only a a few spare parts and practice pieces though:

Things I've noticed:
-Very few curves, everything is very angular.
-Most of the ships and tanks have one little glassy, eye-like cockpit near the middle.
-The forward facing treads are standard on all vehicles. I mean that all of the tanks with forward facing treads use identical treads.
-The top faces and certain angles are rimmed with lighter colours, with a few points of the lightest shade on the corners.
-Small geometric vents are a common detail, appearing on pretty much every ship.
-There are very few right angles, most angles are closer to 45 degrees.
-The muzzle for a small, standard bullet generating gun is usually 4 pixels wide.
-Among the symmetrical ships, the only objects that are not mirrored are the cockpit and large, attention grabbing components (such as the plate on the front of the lime-coloured tank's main cannon).
-Individual plates rarely, if ever, cast shadows on each other.
-Stripes either travel straight or at 45 degree angles.

That's all I can think of for now. There's definitely more though.

I've been practicing dodonpachi style. I guess it has mutated in my hands.

Trying my hand at this was quite fun, although I'm not happy with the fins.

Anywho, this is my WIP Dodonpachi, using the colors of the massive one in the original post.

*EDIT* Oh, look, an update!

*EDIT2* And all in about one hour, I'm done.
