following the trend

on: May 26, 2007, 11:29:03 am

I loved the idea of Mirre of pixelling yourself as a pokemon trainer so I decided to do it myself.
I'm pretty happy with the result so far. But I'm having doubts about the left arm (our right)
I hope I imitated the style well enough

updates:
1:
2+3+4:
which one looks best, update 2,3 or 4?

not a bad start, but the palette is a bit uniform and drab, you may want to have some other color just to break it up a little.

whats the differences between the updates?  it looks like the same image 3 times
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

The difference between the last 3 updates is the position of the legs. I decided to continue with update 2

-Redid the shading on the shirt
-Redid the arm, I wanted it to be in the same position as the other arm but looking different, but they became to look more alike when I worked on them further :yell: .
-I did a few recolors to bring more color into it, I think my problem is that I try to bring to much realism into it... I might redo the whole sprite because this sprite doesn't look very pokemonish...

Update!:

Worked on the colors some more and did edits on the face+hair so they look more pokemonish
I also did a little test to see if I caught the style well enough, I placed my updated sprite between all the other pokemon trainer sprites from this site: http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/dptr.html
Then I let my little brother(13) who plays pokemon (ruby I think) check which one I made, it took him 11 tries to get the right one. So I think I can say mission accomplished.
I think I can call this finished, but if anyone has any critique I'll work on that :)

edit:
removed quote, I accidentally quoted myself :yell:

haha, well, basing mission complete on an 11-year old's opinion is one way to do it :)

This is a big improvement over your previous iterations, but some things that could still use attention:

1 - First and foremost, the face.  It appears to be in a completely different style than the pants, which are currently the closest to the PD style...

2 - However, the pants shouldn't use a solid black outline all around.  The side toward the light should have a lighter outline! (you did it basically right on the shirt)

3 - Your poke balls look flat, more like hamburgers

4 - The hair is also pretty far off the style.

5 - A few too many fine details on the shirt, see if you can simplify the design some!

This is great progress, just keep it going.  Once you've started to get the style a little closer You might want to do something else with the character's left arm, rather than just mirroring his right!

For some reason his stance looks stiff, I dunno why, either that or just unappealing.
Also, the shades for the hair are so close at 1x I can hardly tell you used a darker shade.
Maybe recycle the brown for the hair on the shoes as well.

You should increase the size of the pokeball by a pixel or 2, can barely even tell it's there, pretty much looks like part of the hand.
