Here's a couple of references.
The first has some interesting texture and colors, and the characteristic bug shininess. The second, oddly, has little highlights, but interesting colors as well.

Don't shade with small spread out spots, instead use large areas of color. If an area seems rough, add an inbetween color of approximate palette (but don't overdoit! You'll basically need about 7-9 colors per color for each area - brown top shell, pink lower shell -, maybe less, hardly more).

Hmm... interesting. I was hoping more for sprite-type refs, as I have plenty of regular bug refs.

But unless I churn out a demo pretty quick, I'm gonna loose interest in my own project. So I'll use placeholder graphics for now and come back to this when I need to.
