This is where you can expose all the line art you have colored from The Line Art thread, all without the worries of having to create new threads and taking care of them.
Of course, if you are willing to receive critique and improve your pictures, you are more than welcome to post on the Pixel Art Board.
Don't forget to give credit to the original creator when posting.
Enjoy the different takes on the same line art and what not.
Keep it clean.

Helm says: Additionally, you may post sloppy, preliminary, unfinished-not-to-be-finished pixel art here if you feel like it. But you still have to keep it clean, lol!

Souly's lines:

Ooh, doodles:
I took this "grid":

And this palette:

And constricted myself to 4 colors per rectangle, resulting in this:

Which I haven't worked on in ages, and have lost all intentions of finishing.

Anyone else wanna take on those restrictions?

Also,
<monkeyhater

Edit: Hahaha, make the monkey big. :D (oh, and crap, I transparented the eyes)

Messy-ass doodle.

I used the colors:
Code: [Select]
09F911 029D74 E35BD8 4156C5 635688 C00000 ;)

..actually rather pretty colors for a code...

xion - i love those little characters.

1 crit though. the executioner's head, visibly the eye, seems to move in in two steps to look where he will slash. i would attempt an edit to display what i mean but ImageReady really doesn't like the disposal method used in this gif.

basically his head seems to turn - pause - turn. do you see what i mean?

Lineart by Serena. edited by me

Wasn't sure if I was gonna post this but Mirre and Schu suggested I do so.  Couldn't decide whether the pinky/purple one works better or the one that uses the darkest skin tone in it's place so here's both.  I personally prefer the pinky...

I had planned on entering the character screen mock up challenge at Pixeljoint.com, but found that, once again, my idea was too elaborate and detailed to be finished within a short time span. It was supposed to be a fighting/strategy game based on old card games, like poker, and black jack. The suits would each be over-caricaturized characters of the actual suits themselves...I only finished 2 cards:

yeah, I'm losin' it...

B.O.B., the way you portrayed the characters makes so much sense.  Like, I imagine the queen of diamonds to be kind of a stuffy square (or diamond LOLZ), and I imagine the King of Spain to be a violent psycho.  These are really great.

Yeh, I don't see why this isn't being posted in the main Pixel Art board.
I know this place isn't meant for crits, but I'd lessen the harshness of the outline (or outright remove it) from the bottom of the roots, and the underside of the bushes.

couple hours on an NES environment mockup:

I think i'm breaking the 16x16 rule in a couple places but otherwise it should be kosher.  Only using 3 of my palettes so far; rough areas I've hit already are the dithering on the yellow lights, and the smoke on the smokestacks in the background...le sigh!

EDIT - ok its basically done now, probably 4-5 hours or so to include all the tweaks and stuff

DOUBLE EDIT - Here's a version using Arne's WIP "perfect 16 color palette":

cow and doppelganger: very lovely stuff.
adamatomic: great work with these limitations. reminds me a bit of oddworld. what is this 16*16 rule you're talking about?

starcraft2 fanart!11 well actually it turned out pretty bad (epecially the nose area), which is partly because I used the following screenshot instead of the much better concept art as reference..

(12 colors, only lineart was mirrored)

Booooorrred. I am not really happy  with this..the lines are fine..but the shading sucks.

I guess this isen't doodling...but I don't want to make a new topic, and I need help with a better palette..

Just some sketchy stuff I did after playing Silent Hill 2, and trying my hand at creating weird-ass monsters.
- Kitchen knife is actually in proportion, so this guy is really small.
- and his animation I started. Ya, I went the cheap road out, and there are some mistakes with the blood. That's why it's here! :)

Wow, I haven't pixelled in months.

Obviously inspired by Dusty's stuff.  Not very good, and I think borrows too much from Dusty's, but at least it might help me climb out of this slump.

Cool stuff, Dusty  :y:

EDIT:

Cow - I didn't really look at your mockup at first because it's so unfinished, but looking at it now, what's there is really cool.  Please finish it!  I don't believe I've ever played a Western platformer... something that I think would work well in style of Flashback/Blackthorne...

NES restrictions, for the most part.
The beast on the bottom is a Catoblepas, or a relative of it, and the ones on top are, respectively, the Grobble and the Roc. You're the little yellow dude in the top-left. I don't know why my mockups always put the character at the left.

(as in, "I'd really like to play that.")
I can totally imagine running through there, nay, sneaking through there, and pistol-whipping henchmen through the first half before gunz start to blaze in that second outdoor space, where enemies keep spawning until a GO arrow appears.

I don't know why my mockups always put the character at the left.

Western traditional reading direction. Feels natural to start there.

I had a rather different idea of how to colour his lineart... As a drowning guy.

For maximum depression, I debated making the winstate committing suicide with your lawyer (the only non-military personnel allowed in gitmo) present, so that it couldn't be covered up (which actually happened, but the prisoner was saved), or, more optimistically, actually getting a private meeting with a lawyer (hasn't happened yet, but the future is a bright and shiny place).

The bulk of the gameplay will likely consist of sleeping until the next interrogation, where, no matter what you answer, you are beaten, urinated on, threatened with dogs, and splashed in the face with alleged menstrual blood.

that makes my doodle seem a lot less tasteless :

"What's the Frequency Kenneth?"
You are William Tager.  Use your mind powers to psych-out druggies on the streets to collect their Benzedrine tablets, your eventual goal to find dan rather and discover the secret frequency that the media has been broadcasting into your brain.

I believe Helm (or someone) mentioned something about trying to pixel without changing the lightness (BTW, is lightness the same as value?) of any colors, changing only the saturation and hue, which is actually something I'd been meaning to try for a while but forgot about. So yeah, only hue and saturation is changed for all but the background color (which has a lightness of 30).

Adarias: I think that's the first cartoony thing I've seen from you, and I'm lovin' it. Inanimate objects with faces are fright'ning.

upon a suggestion from Mr. Atomic, every color is 50 now:

I've always found it fascinating how changing colors affects the perception of adjacent colors. I mean seriously, I learned about that like, years ago and the fact still amazes me.

Something to help out people whose minds are boggled by this whole process:

Left is Xion's original.  Center is a fully desaturated (Ctrl+Shift+U in Photoshop) version - 50% gray (obviously).  On the right is Image->Mode->Grayscale version (Alt+I+M+G), which uses the old black&white TV algo to maintain something like "true" brightness (technically i think called luminance), separate from the lightness or value according to HLS or HSV histograms in art programs.  Though I think in photoshop there is an option to "preserve luminance" in some of the dialogs?  Not sure...

Also, kudos xion, wicked cool, i can't wait to try one as well :D

Attempt the 50 Brightness challange in Pro Motion. Very tricky, but cool. Also, I took a look at Xian, it seems that his work isn't only 50, seems to be higher and (possibly) lower..

What Ryan drew was what I understood was the point, to have all colors at 50% brightness. The colors in Xion's drawing vary in hue, saturation and brightness. ???

If you open Xion's piece in photoshop, and you set the saturation to zero (either through Adjust->HSV or Adjust->Desaturate) you'll see the entire image becomes 50% gray.  Xion's piece DOES vary in luminance, which was the whole point of me posting what I posted in the first place...I guess I didn't do a very good job :P  That is the whole point of the exercise though - that hue and saturation DO affect luminance, while they have no effect on value.

EDIT - Ryan, I have no idea what is up with your piece.  It doesn't check out to 50% gray either through desaturation OR by running the grayscale convert on it.  Whatever you did, I think you might have did it wrong...

DOUBLE EDIT - Yeah promotion's "brightness" slider is definitely different from the "value" slider in photoshop.  I assume the HSV and HSB algorithms differ somewhat, though it doesn't seem to be according to the grayscale conversion's algo either.  Which is the confusing part!

this is mostly based on the brightnesses of the RGB lights though, not phyisical properties of color.  It's interesting, but the fact that the green light is brightest followed by red then blue, with the averaged (desaturated) gray being just brighter than red is what's accounting for most of these differences.

Using GFX2 on my mac. Its great since no buggy pallete like Pixen, also working fullscreen in a 'low resolution' is alot easier on the eyes. Hope to really get back into pixelling once my exams are over!

Another character design of "The Shadow" that I never finished. I looked back on my older pieces and saw how I used to use FAT black outlines in them, and decided to bring the nostalgia with this biggun', as well as some color experimentation. Didn't work, though. Twas a failed experiment....

Looking through my hardrive and found something that was unfinished but i wanted to share the joke. It was for the avatar killing challenge,
and there was this guy who cheezed me off saying "i know what art is but you don't becuase your stupid". So this was my eleaborate way to
get back at him:

Story: That guy is walking along weirdly wearing 'beatnik' clothers in an art museum. He sees a abstract portrait, then smiles and says "thats
art". He keeps walking along and looks at the next piece. Its modern art, so its a bag with shit in it nailed to a board. He looks at it and says,
"thats art". Then he walks along and sees a fire extinguisher. He looks at it and says "thats art". Finally he keeps walking, slips on a banana peel, falls through a window, down 20 storeys and smacks on the ground. Shows him dead with a rat pulling his brain out. And then another
beatnick walks by, looks at the body, and says "thats art".

I got really busy so i never finished it.

BoB, I have to say that no matter what, your art always looks very good. It's such a different style for pixel art that it's always aesthetically pleasing, even if the subject is boring.

Its modern art, so its a bag with shit in it nailed to a board.

I'd just like to point out that at some point ALL art was Modern... those cave paintings the cavemen did... modern art at the time... likewise, that stuff that the turtles did (you know, raphael, michelangelo, donnatello and leonardo) did was modern... at the time... and indeed I'm sure you're all aware that the likes of monet, and pissaro, and manet, and van gogh, and Renior, and Degas, and Cezanne, and Gaugin, etc - was modern (and [at the time] considered shit and not worthy of public display by the art establishment)

Point I'm making is that using the term 'Modern Art' refers to all art at some point in history depending on your point in time(realistically) but it tends to applied to any art that is difficult to 'understand' because it's not a painting of a nice landscape or a bowl of fruit or a sculpture of some biblical figure... And in reality modenism began as an art movementin the late 19th and early 20th century and is still being used today (in a pejorative manner) which I personally find quite ironic.

I know what you're saying Sharprm though... it's just that the subjectivity of art is so open to personal interpretation that it's nigh on impossible to argue the case.

...
...
...

what's that over there? is a can... of worms per chance...?

digging through some old folders, found what I think was my first attempt at pixel art:

and a couple months ago I started to improve it:

I decided to keep the same colours (taken from a LTTP screenshot lol) and see how much better I could make it (added black tho)
I should finish it one of these days..

To be fair, the whole reason it was called that was in response to the industrial revolution and sorts. Modernism and 'modern art' were kind of a bigger picture kind of movement encompassing a variety of new styles and things of that sort. Just as the renaissance was a 'rebirth' of roman and greek art, or how neoclassicism was... well you get the point I think. Someone called it modern art for a reason, not just because it was new. It was in response to something, just the same as all artistic shifts ever made. I don't think they would've called themselves modern back in the day. New, revolutionary maybe, but not modern.

Felt compelled to respond to this. Sorry for getting tangential

liked it so much i wanted to try and throw some scary hip gyrations in there. Might look half-decnt if i kept at it and cleaned up the lines. Would be fun to see some more movement on the tip of the hat. Maybe see that it becomes more squished when moving the animation is moving to the right. Very festive

NICE! I like it tons more now. Feels much more fluid and fun. Great touch on the feet. I felt like there should be some kind of movement there, but i couldn't figure out what to suggest. Well, I was gonna suggest some kind of feet sliding, but when i tried it out during my edit, it looked bad. I really don't have anything more to suggest, and in fact think you should refrain from adding much more. Anything more would start to be overkill and distract from your main animation.

Once again, great update.

Just a mini art dump. I hope that these count as doodles. I didn't want to make a new topic for them.
Well! Very nice tileset, but you could add some shadows projected from objects. I mean, the shadow of the trees and bushes over the ground. That would give a really nice touch of realism not present yet in this peace.

Adam - i love everything about that

just some doodles from design class (not an assignment, the teacher just left us to our own devices while making copies - which apparently takes half an hour)

hexagon form is misleading because it creates the sense of a job tree.  nope! just random pasting.

after looking at these a little more (and talking to fil) i've been made aware that there are somewhere between monkey island, partisan, and ben's works >.<

Show moooooooore stuff!

also, in honor of soul brotherhood, a homage <3

Is this pure love?

Because I think I have found pure INTRNET love <3

Helm: Probably coming up (:

Adamatomic: SUCH TASTEFUL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CAVESTORY RIP-OFF STYLE TT wTT

I hereby demand you to make a cavestory-style game. Like the underside. Because .. It looks so good (:

Plus, do you want some real katakana (I KNOW SECRET SKILLS) or is it a mingled mess of WTF for the heck of it? Or can't I read?

I see:

Gakui (ka)mishiisutechikaisu

Is this an indecipherable romanization or just somebody hammering on his/her keyboard? O: Tellme~

I'm pretty sure he just got a Japanese font and typed the thing as you would do in English (as in he typed The Underwater instead of reading what character is what) and thus the mess :P

well as part of the point of the piece is to highlight how jacking someone else's art style can cheapen your game's presentation, I think the silly literal katakana actually suits this project better :)  but thanks anyways!

Eh... why the lower one?

Because I have no sense of humor D:>

And Atomic: Yeah, sure, but the case with podunkian is that he seriously didn't get how much he was jacking cave story's art style.

It's like he doesn't get the difference between inspiration and plagiarism. I imagine he started making the Underside and then he made the main character and then he went 'Man, I want simplistic backgrounds like in cave story because those sure are nice' and then he tried making them and 'what the heck, I can't nail the style D:<' so he busted up some cave story screens and looked at them (he's said that he has done so himself) and then he 'nailed it'.

And so he was happy because the game looked like he wanted it to look.

Only problem: It looked just like cave story. D:>

Especially with the accumulating-damage-damage-numbers and the health bars. Heh.

The only problem is, I can totally feel for him. If I was gonna do a game with numbers showing damage, I'd do it cave story style. And well, if you see my age old platform RPG mock-up, (still thinking about that game now and then, just never feel that I have the personal resources to make it now. D:) it kind of rips the way of rendering the main character from cave story. Or at least I, after having played cave story kind of went 'Man, this flat shading style is so FRESH, I want to do animation with this, so effective time-wise!!'

So yeah. D:>

I think this image is a bit douche-bag:y, but it's hilarious :D

Problem is, I want to play the game = A=

well i was hoping that the other theme that'd come through the picture is that, HECK YES cave story's art style is awesome AND very fun to work with.  So I mean i'm not blaming the badunkadunk for wanting to mimic it.  I wouldn't have spent like 6 hours putting together those screens if it wasn't such a fun style to work with!  But it's still not MY style, and its DEFINITELY not his style.

There was supposed to be more samurai soldiers behind him, but this was just practice any way, as I'm trying to stick to more simple designs now...gettin' tired of people telling me my stuff is too detailed for primary focus...

a would-be Mockup Frenzy. . . erm. . . #1? entry; yep. . . I'm pretty sure the theme was, like, 'exaggerated female features', or something. :)

I really didn't know how to make an one-button game out of it. . . well. . . hmm. . . hehe, so I haven't finished the piece, right? :)

Not exactly a doodle, but I'm not looking for hardcore critique as typical of a new thread. It's something I started working on today as an entry for the April Fool's weekly challenge (this weeks' challenge is a 'catch-up' challenge with all previous challenges as fair game) at PJ, but I think it stands on its own by now. Initially inspired by some of Helm's work.

Right now your at 11 colors, but i think you might be better if you added a few more and made it 16 or something.  also, your palette is very unbalenced lumnanace wise, and i think that by evening it out some, you might also be able to add some volume to it.

edit:  palette edits.

edit x 2: just noticed your reference picture.  i think you could do with some working on the facial structure (what is that random purple block in on the bottom of his cheek?

Hm... thanks for that, eck! I'd like to say that I also take notice of the face issues and have already tweaked it a bit since this one (chin was too far out, for example).

As far as colors go, I'll say for now that I was planning on upping it to 16 whenever I start doing final touches. On the color choices themselves, there's nothing I can really say. It's a mixture of instinct and ritualistic decision-making on my part. I'll take the palette you've created for a test run and see how I like it, though! I've been told about having issues with contrasting colors before, so you're definitely not the first.

Once I met Helm and he told me that this is a bad idea. Make the palette from the beginning, tweak it constantly while you work, but have the index slots filled from the beginning of working more or less so you can use every color everywhere as needed while creating volumes and textures.

If it's about the chin, however, I already know. That's one of the spots I see major problems with, but I would guess your critique might be more on color usage?

Anyways, enough speculation! On with it!

Yes it is about color usage.

Have you noted that there's a HUGE value jump from the saturated purple to the first flesh shade? If you grayscale it it's a huge jump, it's even huger in how the purple is saturated (makes it warmer and needs more buffer shades before it can mesh with the flesh shades that are relatively desaturated. Blur your eyes a little and look at your palette ramp. Tell me if after the blue in the middle, the rest of the shades don't blur out to a single color more or less. This isn't bad Subtlety makes for index swapping and good dithering and shit. But you need more shades to go from the dark 1/3rd of the palette to the bright 2/3s of it. Keep in mind, you don't need many dark shades because in darkness there isn't much detail, it all blends towards a single color, that's fine. So it's good you have more palette slots for brighter stuff. But what you're missing, is MIDDLE VALUE RANGE. In a big way.

That is all for now. Remember, portray volumes before you start dithering and AAing.

Good points and points taken. Seems to be what eck was getting at previously, but in your own style of explanation. I completely agree about the purple, but particularly only on the chin, the bit on the cheek, and then the bit that's in the front of the eye. It really sticks out there, while I think it really works for the rest of the eye and hair, obviously.

So, yes. That would definitely be one big flaw with choosing new colors later than initially. Thanks for the pointers, guys.

just a quick thing, making dark cloud 2 into a 2d sidescroller - not sure if it works for pixeljoint challenge BUT i thought i might play around for a few minutes anyway.

yeah i suffer from "holy crap it's sunday already?" syndrome when not under contract.

i'm thinking of making a thread for all my half-begun weeklies...

small update, decided to buy into their really tacky ugly fun design sense and at the same time to to show people whether i can work with obvious colors, simple shapes, and all the other things that game designers prefer to my usual splatter.

Wonderful improvement over your last version. Your animation skills are improving. You're focusing on the keyframes more. More pop to your actions.

I like it a lot, especially the walk. It's almost like a strut, if it were possible for a 4-legged tank to do that

Just a side by side comparison of an old commission. I redid one of my older sprites for the guy, just for fun. I know that her left arm is a bit shaky now, but I actually addressed that. My old gif animator is no more and so I'm left with a crappy one that I try not to use unless I really have to.

I personally prefer the old one, If only for the contrast and saturation that the new one seems to lack.  I think the new snake lady's arm could be in a more natural position, the whole "idk" pose seem a little odd.

Finally got around to coloring this, too! I intentionally misinterpreted it, but I tried to stay close to the original lines. It's getting too late for me to tell, but the anatomy is probably wonky and there are some depth issues with the angle of the spear. I'm pretty happy with the palette management (14 colors for the character) so hopefully this looks good on another monitor.

Weapons doodles I drew up after seeing some pixelart from geeq on TIGForums from yonks back.  From Top, weapons are Flamethrower, Sniper, Minigun, Assault Rifle, Machine Pistol, Rocket Launcher, Shotty, Grenade Launcher.  I want to make a Platformy Shooter Tactical Cover system thing out of it, a dream that will never come to fruition.

This is what happens when I restore my computer and become lazy.

Then I thought it was pretty inspirational, so I made it into a doodle.

It's... a... Cloudduckie™? I don't know what it's supposed to be, really.

.TakaM, that's a lovely animation. So smooth...hmmm, nice.

Decided to just post these doodles. Every time I work on something, I always go back to these, and create a new one, or work and clean existing sprites. I figured that kids of the new age would never go back to 2d or pixelized Mario and whatnot, and 3d is what they want. So I'll just post these here, and enjoy 'em myself(initial submitted piece: Clicky!...

*cleaned up Mario and Luigi's sprites, so there is not so much unneeded celout, and such
*Changed most baddies Palettes to a more VIBRANT color.
*added some Shy guys, and kamikaze babombs(or whatever their named) and reworked toad
*mysterious black mushroom character is the fella with the red and green orbs...and turban

Basically, reworked and cleaned some of my older Mario fan art, with character designs for a possible fan game with the "Mysterious Black Mushroom" being the center of the show(bad guy). The story was going to be a preamble to how Mario and Luigi came to be, with background stories regarding Toad's race and whatnot. Man...was going to be chalk full of nerd-dom, but alas, it just( and always will) boils down to my over-active imagination.

those are the most badass renditions of mario characters and creatures I have ever seen, B.O.B.
Toad frightens me.
Erm, if I may:
seems weird how some creatures have darker outlines than others even in the outlines version. like the koopas as compared to mario & co. Bob-omb especially stands out because of his thinness.

and is that...is that f'kin Yoshi!?

The blue Dinos (all 3) are not Yoshi, don't be silly. They are enemies from SMW.

These are quite nice, tho I have to say the extra outline versions are not to my liking. What they need are light dependant outlines I think, which you have already in some of them anyway.

Those Mario pictures are awesome. Mario and Luigi are my favourite, followed by the piranha plant and the thwomp.

I decided to try doing some larger pixelwork, since it's not really something I've done before. The first one's an alien that popped into my head somewhere between playing the two best shooters ever, Metroid Prime and Half-Life 2. The second one's a nest of some sort I guess (I didn't really have anything in mind when I started). The third one was done at the request of my 9-year-old brother.

Those're neat B.O.B, I totally thought that they were redone versions of Mike Tyson's Punch Out characters at first. I was prety psyched about it, then got slightly disappointed when they weren't, so I made one myself.

Anyways...My favorite of the bunch is the guy in the purple pants. Either him or the blue and yellow mask guy, they both have lots of personality. :)

Incredibly awesome stuff here guys.

Some wip stuff i've got, most of it has creation dates from last year or so. I plan on finishing these eventually, but not in the next week or 5:
Fantasy/Pinball inspired woman portrait, also color practice.

This is from an old challenge at Pixelopolis, in which we were given a mspaint-esque, admittedly complicated palette to work with.

Based on lineart by Wolverine, i tried to color it. Then i went nuts and started added "realistic" shading over the previous stuff.

Social commentary on something, don't quite remember what originally.

C+C if you feel like. I'm very slowly acquiring a better eye for contrast and colors, which some don't reflect yet.

Meet Larwick.
Larwick is sad because Opacus' Emperor won't show up. Dead link or something. I dunno.

EDIT: Shows up fine now. :)
Opacus, i find his face to be very unoriginal, it's the kind of design that's very commonly used. I'd suggest doing something more interesting to it than the devil horn things. Also maybe give him some arms that are doing something - for intrigue. Otherwise it's a pretty cool character atm.

Started this a while back, and never had enough to finish it. I wanted it to be like those Norman Rockwell covers, where the people's emotions are easily noticed, but in a kinda' "cartoony" sort of way. I was trying to separate them in a layer style, so I could work on the background, then the  kid, then the parents, but managed to fail at it...many times. Oh well, if anyone else feels they can do something with these junky lines, be my guest : )

Heh, Thanks Turbs, would fix 'em if I could courage up some willingness to work. But nay, my laziness is too powerfull...hence, and most appropriately, the forseen segway into...

MORE UNFINISHED JUNK!!!

This was created about 1 to 2 years ago. Looking back it, I see some problems, typos, and an excuse to use some default mspaint text(eww, heh). Man, time flies. Was to be a wip of the first pixel community episode I was creating. It was going to include a new pixel artist every new episode, as the protagonist, "bob"(me), a young man who is part of a group of young people that partake in the way of the pixel, is suddenly caught in the midst of a hostile purist-pixel take over! Basically, the story was going to run around the MSP virus, and how some artists were infected by it, and the purists wanted to "stop" the infection from spreading to other up and comers. It came down me and a little girl who I was going to be protecting and blah blah...I had a small story written up and everything, but the animation is so damn pain staking it begins to eat at you in the end..was fun while it lasted

. . .

And here is the second part of the unfinished episode...damn I'm lazy...

my back hurts...

Correct. That's why I never submitted it a while back. I thought it would have gotten some arguments over how it's depicting Helm as "the bad guy" or showing some members as "elite" pixel artists and whatnot. Probably in poor taste, which is another reason why I scrapped the idea entirely(but more so, just being lazy). Of course I was doing it just for fun's sake, nothing really serious, or subtle overtones. Again this was a while back, and I felt maybe I could just showcase the little animation I completed. Again, no offense to anyone, and I apologize for my bad depictions(of character, AND of crappy, realistic portraits, heh)...

Thanks again, though...

It's not so much that I am depicted as a bad guy, I can understand it's done in good fun, it's more that I don't appreciate my actual person being in some way connected with... a culture of sorts around internet pixel art. I don't like self-reference and I certainly am not spending hours a week helping people with their art to gain any sort of visibility.

Yes, that's exactly how I wanted it! The last pose was actually for a "sucking in" animation similar to Kirby's, but I forgot to mention that.

Can you read minds?  ;D
Thanks!

It's okay opacus, but there's a lot of misaligned lines. The parts on the side should all follow a single path. There's other stuff too... i suggest you put it up for critique. Mainly because i want to play around with it

Thanks! Yeah, first i'll have to revisit those animations since i've noticed a few issues after getting my new monitor. I would've done more with him but i've been concentrating on other stuff. Tbh i'm still not 100% sure what i'll be doing with him, but it's a fun character anyway.

Yeah, copied the sprites into GGale from MSPaint and tried to align them but had a hard time. I can't get used to the interface. :ouch:
The aim of the project is to finish a sheet within one week. Just seeing if I could do it. So the run is three frames and the attacking is one frame.

CPC mode 2 is quite challenging! (double height pixels, 640x200 resolution, only 2 colors)
I haven't even conformed to all the restrictions here, these are only mode2-ish. some areas use more than 2 colors and you would have to resort to stacking CPC+ sprites to display them properly.

If you're curious, you can do doubleheight-pixel pixeling by exactly the same method as doublewidth, just swapping the axes.
In GIMP I set the horizontal dpi to match the reported monitor DPI, set the vertical DPI to half that, and toggle 'view->dot per dot' OFF.

doublewidth and doubleheight pixels are both quite challenging, I'm just more used to doublewidth. The combination of 2 colors and doubleheight really pushes me esp. WRT dithering and shape definition.
If you insist on being pessimistic about your own abilities, consider also being pessimistic about the accuracy of that pessimistic judgement.

Stupid answer but I sure can assume that position with no problems. O: On the other hand I'm flat footed and do have problems with my feet so I guess it's not very normal : D

It's very possible. and not that far distant from normal physical ability, IMO. At least, I figure if ballet exercises granted that to me, who has excessively muscular feet, people with more normal feet might be able to manage it even easier.

It's not what you would expect, no. :)

Academic. The issue is not whether that is a possible position, the issue is that cow should be careful to not default to stuff he draws without being critical about how he's come to adopt them. This sort of flat-footed look is quite popular with a lot of artists I've noticed for similar reasons. I asked, if he stood like that normally and he felt comfortable with it he could keep it, but if not, then I urged him to check why he drew that angle, that's all.

Yeah, the edit is definitely far closer to how I stand in reality... the legs are switched around, but that really doesn't matter. I wish I could blame the original feet on something other than my incompetence... comes from the mental comfort of symbols I guess. :B

Will you finish it?
I don't think so, at the risk of sounding lazy the original intent was a sloppy Paint piece with a good likeness. I'll have some serious-ish stuff to post soon though, I think. So I can get back in the groove. Yeah.

Scribbing together a mock-up for a DS homebrew idea. Post-apocalyptic zombie setting:

Pretty sure contrast is a huge issue with it, especially if it were to be on a DS. Still scribbling away at it, though.

@Atnas: Delicious! I was just thinking, though the tops of the walls look a little silly to me. What I mean is, I don't think I've ever really seen solid brick blocks like that for typical buildings. Maybe the tops should be dark/shroud, or come to a different texture like brick-lined concrete or something like that? Just an idea. Or! Apply a bit more of a hue shift between the walls/tops. Just as an experiment. Whatever, it still looks cool  :)

@Dusty: I like the style, but there definitely needs to be some balance introduced, in terms of contrast. I like the pastel-y feel, but you'll need some shadow to break it up and control how it reads. Also, I'm assuming its a top-down view, with a + intersection of roads and the roof of a building? When I first saw it the left part of the road actually looked like a 3/4 view wall of the roof.

Eyecraft, I'll definitely give that a go next time I pick it up. :)

Dusty, I love the smoothness you've got going. Though EyeCraft's statement about a roof made me unsure on if that's a sidewalk as I had thought @_@ The tones make it seem like it's almost on the same plane to me. Rock'n yellow smudges and cracks!

Well buildings aren't in there yet and I hope to add some nice contrast with dark contrasting shadows being cast from the buildings. I don't want to make the sidewalks, grass, and street feel separate though, as I intend to make it all feel like they're one solid ground(for the player to navigate one), while also making them feel merged and unified via time and lack of upkeep.

Like I said though, contrast is definitely something I need to address, but I'm so comfortable with these colors right now in working with them I don't want to start changing them yet... if you get what I mean.

Some quickly done mocks; an hour or less on each.

An animation that I'm not really pleased with. The timing is off, and the leaf looks rather stiff because of the way I chose to animate it. Probably won't revisit it unless I'm redoing it completely.

Delicious colors and clarity as usual Doppleganger. For the animation, I think you could add more pounce by bunching up the flagella some on that frame before the jump.

Oldish unfinished idle and bird's eye practice.

Hitting the books on color a few years too late..... on that note, pretty lovely colors Doppelganger  ;D

While i like the stuff you have there atnas, the animated one looks masculine, so the bouncy chest makes it very uncomfortable to me :blind:.

Good eye, the sprite was originally male, the feminization occured midway through. It's unfinished so I'm not sure how I would have taken it, but seeing as to how I have recieved several comments on gender  :-[ it is something I will try to address more carefully in future works with SCIENCE

and yes it is quite creepy regardless of the rest of the body what was I thinking. Something akin to the musclebaby thought process?  :P

I think the most fun thing about the boob bounce is that it looks like the boobs have no gravity and are suspended in midair while the body moves : D

Atnas, I really like your dithering style on the lizardman pic, and it fits very well with the color choice too.
Is this theme of disconcerting boobs going to continue? I approve :)

The usual denizens of my mind, with some not so usual. 5 ZILLION WAYS TO RENDER GRASS WITH CPC PALETTE. Also, with a 5x5x5 color cube used where  I couldn't manage CPC palette usage (getting skin tones in CPC palette == HARD). In other news, commentary in Lojban, strange shrubbery, and some guy who looks like he'd do rather well animated. A noticeable lack of dual lightsources, which is one of the tricks to really good looking CPC gfx.

And as always, new technology. Such is the way of the me.

I like your cpc doodles, AI. You seem to have a pretty good grasp on how to utilize that palette. I take one look at that 5x5x5 box you've got, and... well actually I was gonna say that it's a confusing mass of neon colors, but zoomed in it looks pretty versatile. For the longest time, palettes set up that way intimidated me. Maybe I should try doing some of that nature myself. I've still never really made any graphics based on older systems.

This is how it ended up. The portrait is still jacked up imo, but it's mostly the hair and that will change.

The map and gui look ace, but that portrait is all kinds of messed up. I suggest you keep the jacket and redo the rest. You've probably grown blind to the deformation from looking at it too much.

Thanks, and yeah, you're right. The hair I feel is what's doing the worst damage, but I'll try and employ some critique to improve it all. I don't necessarily feel 100% about any specific aspect.

Thanks!! That's actually the reason I started the picture, because I was sure that the inherent cuteness imparted by widepixels would play nicely with drawings of nude women :)
The pine tree demonstrates well the argument of the past few weeks re: treatment of method vs result on PJ; it was sketched with a largish brush randomly rotated (using GIMP's new brush rotation dynamics settings), which established the overall aesthetic excellently well. Lots of touch up required since pixel clustering was often a little clumsy, I still reckon I saved a lot of time agonizing by using a clumsier, aesthetically consistent tool to start with.

The 5x5x5 is pretty much my favorite colorcube. the 3x3x3 CPC one forces you to become a good dramatist, so to speak, and the 5x5x5 one still requires dramatization/exaggeration, but you can usually get roughly any isolated color you wanted without having an excess of choice, so it might be more approachable . Another thing that's nice about really small cubes like CPC is that it makes it very profitable to use plenty of black, so the resultant graphics get people to use their imagination more.

Re: your more recent mockup:
I like the character/unit style, and the various styles you've used for different types of graphic mesh well.. except for the character portrait (maybe this is just because of her hair sharing most of the interface colors. Might have a little more pop-outness if only say, the highlights shared the UI colors)

Re: your older mockup:
Again, I really like the style (reminds me a little of Earthbound, actually).
I think if you stacked a mirrored L:
Code: [Select]
.*
**
of dark pink pixels on top of the existing short row
Code: [Select]
**
on the bottom left of her hair, it would emphasize the shape of her hair and provide an interesting 'echo' vs the shape of her hat.

Reo, that's great.

Finally I opened up my Wacom tablet; it's great to use again.  It's funny, I bought it when I was around 10...  I saved up $80 and ordered it.  I tried it for pixeling an RPG sprite in Paint and was, obviously, disappointed.  But now, with a hell of a lot more art training and realizing it's really only useful for those skilled with paper-pencil work and for digital painting, I broke out Photoshop 6.0 full version (don't laugh) and have been sketching a lot.  Here's a far-from-finished likely-to-be-abandoned sketch:
Linked full-sized image.
   Scaled down.
My imagination + a lost reference for water.  I plan to actually color the tree and grass, and make the water part-transparent and draw some rocks under it.  I wanted a stream/creek type thing...
Comments welcome!  I will color it fully, don't worry. ::)

I don't even know what voxel is...

Here's something I did for a job application. Sadly they chose to go for non pixel work. Still proud of it though. Took about 5 hours. Modeled after Movie Optimus. 16 colours.

This was a few weeks coming, I just never got around to finishing the characters. I definitely prefer the characterless version, but this one has the completeness in it's favour. Also I obviously didn't think this one through, with the background being so large and the playfield being so small, so please look past the unrealisticness. Let's say this is the level intro and it needs the space to reveal the setting. The better version is here.

EDIT: Some people are telling me that they see the top blue sky and mountains as because of the 'valley' created by the dark portion to the right. Is this an actual issue, or should I just stop associating with these people?

Some WIP sprites/tiles for a Blackthorne ripoff inspired project. The sleevelessness will definitely go, this is just some in progress unoriginality.

Any crits you have would be greatly appreciated, I would have made a thread but the L4D mockup is too close to completion and there's not much to show for the other thing.

Warehouse mock for a promo flash game that we're working on. The game that we're promoting is TMNT Smash-Up, and this game will end up on some Ubisoft site.

Window Light effect is NPA. Mock was constructed in about 4 hours (not including the characters).

Circle and rectangle colours are eyedropped from the video.

Here's a closeup of a mockup I made about five years back as my first pixeling attempt that I can remember (aside from possibly ANSI art a decade and a half back if you count that):

and an animation I sketched out that afternoon (really sorry the movement is so sloppy, but I was just drawing frame after frame without planning):

The textures on those top image are delicious. Nice doodles along the bottom, too. I like the mystic/mysterio feel of the iso building. I'm not sure if it was intentional to only texture the front, or if you just got bored and wanted to move on. Either way, the result is nice.

Did you ever see Arachne's EGA platformer mockups? She also recently posted some RPG tiles and while I don't think they use hte ega palette, they have a bit of an EGA flavour to them.

His legs animate a bit wonky, don't you think? Well, more like the transition from the first frame to the last. I imagine there's some way to improve that.

Other than that, I don't really see this as an attack, so much as a parry of sorts. His body language suggests that he's getting out of the way of danger rather than coming at it. One reason is probably due to the initial wind-up looking like a quick poke, and the actual attack looking like he's swiping whatever counter the enemy may have had out of the way. The other reason has to do with him backing and up, and generally being more upright than he should be. My guess is that this guy isn't really an adept fighter, but even so, I think my criticisms still stand. And, if he's meant to be a skilled fighter, even rudimentarily so, then you've got work to do.

Well, it's funny you mention that wonky transition.

First, I should clarify that you're actually looking at two attacks, each consists of 8 frames, where the first 4 are the slash, and the following 4 the recovery. After each recovery he will have a unique transition back to his idle stance (not yet made), or if the player presses attack again, they will initiate the next slash. Each period of recovery can be interrupted at any frame to perform another attack

Here is the final animation:

Perhaps it will be more obvious once the streak marks are put in (they will be on a different sprite layer) but I think it reads well once you see it looped properly.
No he isn't a seasoned swordsman, and it's very hard to convey that type of elegance especially when you're trading in realistic animation for responsive gameplay as I am.

All good points, Takam. The final animation, and what you stated, are enough to alleviate my concerns atm. I'd say keep plugging away! I guess what I was seeing was exactly what was happening.

I think my only concern is the actual swing of the sword is missing a huge gap, and no trial or such to fill it in. It just looks like the sword jumps from one side to the other.

I think that with swooshes it will look alright. Takam is going for a quick response time between when the player presses the attack button, and when the attack will connect with an enemy. It's necessary to cut the actual attack into more exaggerated frames in order to achieve that. I think that currently the player would be connecting with the enemy after two frames of animation have played, which is pretty quick response time. The animation after the connection actually serves a double-purpose here. One, it creates a specific window in which the player should press the attack button again to attack. And two, it allows for the sword swoosh to residually disappear, which creates a sort of gradation when combined with the initial attack. And it's that gradation the swooshes provide, that make me think it's alright. And actually, would work better than, say adding more frames to the initial attack and just speeding up the frame rate to correct for timing.

Thanks, I didn't want to sound too up myself, but I think combining the recovery following each swing as the build up for the next is a great solution.

While we're on the subject of animations...

Some of the frames are too sketchy, and everything but the idle was compromised for time. Overall I dig it, but any concerns I'm willing to listen to.  Although, I have to admit that the last few frames of the death animation have this flopping snake body that doesn't look convincing at all. I knew that it didn't, but I didn't have the desire to go back and rework the past 4+ frames to correct it.

Couldn't resist having a quick go at colouring some of Arachne's lovely lines.

Doppleganger: that's really sweet. I think the death anim part is great. The spinning out and in could do with an extra frame though I think.

I was going to recreate a particular boss battle that takes place on top of a tower against a giant eagle as a scenic piece of work rather than a mock-up of a game. Then as I started, I of course got distracted trying to add details rather than following my original intent. I ended up rendering the shape in 3D and then traced and outline of it and shaded from there. Lighting is all my work(as I'm sure it shows).

Ya, the tower is not reflective of anything at all I originally had in mind, so I guess it's just a volume/shading practice.

Helm says: Additionally, you may post sloppy, preliminary, unfinished-not-to-be-finished pixel art here if you feel like it. But you still have to keep it clean, lol!

I thought I'd try animating something.  Also trying to balance size against detail.  Sloppy and not to be finished.

@dusty: Just for kicks? Also, why not post in the main section? I think the bush came out best so far. It gives a nice hint of how nice it could look, if broke with the blockiness a bit. Also the shade of the tree, as well as the moss on the wall looks a bit too averaged out, no hard edges/no discernible structure. I'd go for the thicker outline of the bush for most of the rest too.

@cow: niceness all over. Torso of leather-jacket facing a different angle than the rest of him. The collar/zipper doesn't define the volume correctly, would need to bulge more to the left.

For lack of concept, gogo gadgeto doodle post.

Ugh, suffering from creativity block.  To try and break it I used some random generators at Seventh Sanctum (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/) and Serendipity (http://nine.frenchboys.net/index.php) and got some things like:

Quote
The promiscuous, worldwise female half-Basilisk necromancer. She has a voluptuous build. Her non-human ancestry gives her a horribly inhuman appearance.

The clever, sheltered female half-Air Elemental illusionist. Her wardrobe is severe. She appears far more non-human than human.

The tactless male half-Gorgon alchemist with a large fortune. He body is one half human - one half taking after his non-human ancestor.

 ---

This wise lady has large eyes the color of coffee with cream. Her luxurious, curly, amber hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a dustball. She is short and has an angular build. Her skin is pale. She has a wide forehead and a large mouth. Her wardrobe is mysterious.

This noble man has narrow eyes the color of smoke. His fine, curly, slate-gray hair is medium-length and is worn in an exotic, carefully-crafted style. He has a feminine build. His skin is cream-colored. He has knobby ears. His wardrobe is practical and businesslike, with a lot of yellow.

A little mixing and matching, and I doodled these two.

A half basilisk necromancer with amber hair and mysterious(?) clothing.
A half air-elemental with dark curly hair and severe clothing - I don't know what would count as severe clothing, I stopped here.
Didn't start the half-gorgon male.

About 2 hrs each, I'm slow.  I doubt I'll go any further with them, but I think I can say I'm comfortable with faces. Not sure if the creativity block is broken yet.

As a side note, the random generators on these pages could also be used for a contest / activity here at Pixelation.

I'm all about the journey, but that seems kind of bad. D: What program are you using? I know that pixelling lowres faces with many colors can be quite the timesink in trying to convey everything you want to convey (especially if you're attempting a likeness), but usually it's best to focus on the whole holistic effect of the piece before your brain turns to mush and you need fresh eyes, in my opinion.

I'm going to do some things based on those generators, give me a moment. :)

The deformed race that resembles the angels of earth mythology. They change genders as they age. They are notoriously laid-back. Their government is a meritocracy. They are regarded virtually as gods by some races. Another race uplifted them to sentience. They come from a high-gravity, watery, resource-rich world that has many moons.

Might make a topic for and finish this.

Two hours by the file timestamps.  Some of that was spent browsing the web, eating snacks, and the like, but most of it was pixelling.  Since I can't point to any other useful result from that time I have to conclude that I'm absurdly slow.  Program was mtPaint; an ok program but nothing special.

Nice images btw, both the man with gun and the one based on the generators.  Do you plan to finish the one with the species description?

Cow, I'm afraid the gun arms are, though beautifully rendered and pixelled, completely wrong. The guns are tiny, out of perspective and rotation in relation to the grip. You'll need to completely redraw either the hands or the gun (I propose the latter) and this time use a real life reference point for how that shape should cohere with the perspective.

I agree. I feel a little over my head here trying to salvage this instead of just doing it over, but I'll give it a shot. I went and bought a toy gun for reference, though I probably didn't use it as much as I should have.

I drew this, but I don't know if it's a step in the right direction:

Marginal changes like increasing the size of the gun/changing index finger rotation are easy fixes when I get to pixelling it. But I think I should maybe just start from scratch so I can get the hand rotation to be natural, it will probably be easier with my new toy gun at my disposal. I'm not sure yet.

It's one of these times where an actual photo for reference helps a lot.

Doodles huh?

I remember making this one a few months back; it's kinda old. I've been thinking of refining it into a decently sized sprite, which shouldn't be too hard, but mostly it's just lighting practice. Also don't ask about the foot because I probably won't fix it.

...On that note:

Also old. This file is brand new, though, because this doodle itself is cut from one among many of my sketchdumps. At least I think they're called sketchdumps. Is there another word for that?

I got to visit the niece and nephew this weekend, and we got the chance to break out the crayons and some Ed Emberley drawing books.  It was silly fun.  I redid a couple of the pieces in pixels, although vectors would probably have been a better choice.

Dragon:

Pet skeleton:

So, um, a couple of doodles.

Is that a ... diglett? Quite a neat way to think of it. Would your version of a dugtrio just be a three-headed version of it or ... three of them.

Ooh. A Diglett? Didn't think of it that way, but now that I see it, I can't unsee it. Silly references. *cymbal clash for the umpteenth time*

As for the digtrio, not sure on that one. Tell you what, I might just make it if I can find a way to get that to work. Other pokémon too, if I'm not lazy. I just don't want to get too carried away with it. :P

Tiny Cortex Command, seeing how small I could get the coalition soldier designs before I lost too much clarity.
The guns were fun too.

Arne's 16colour.

INCOMING DUMP

Regardless of whether or not this is just coincidence between me and Geti considering I started this a week ago, various tiny Cortex Command inspired... things. Dropships in three sizes and even tiny factions of space-people to go with them (not including upper-leftmost). Not actual size, calm down.

Generic supervillain-ess. Made last night? I tend to draw with my head tilted when I'm on the verge of falling asleep on my keyboard.

Trying to paint with a program that (other than for spriting) does not serve its purpose very well. I think you know what. Mostly perspective problems, even if it is some sort of panorama. Looks decent if you squint, though. Maybe I'll redo this one in something else besides MS paint. Also, thanks to someone at Kuler for the palette!

Fortunately I have the GIMP! It's not the best, though. Less brush settings. But you have the basic stuff. Lighting here looks a bit flat.

...Well?

"PAPAYA BUSTER", a club flyer, busier than a busy something-something. Recycled some old unused stuff in there.

This poster makes me so happy looking at it!

By the way, is there any way to reply to a message without quoting it?

...Well?
I have no idea what this is. A disembodied bird head?

Also, GIMP isn't very good at painting from scratch, as you noticed.
I suggest MyPaint. I use it almost exclusively myself (MyPaint for actual drawing, GIMP for editing/production touches.).

Playing with Grafx2's new animation support, I made a magic-y effect:

Quoted cause no one could see it on the white bg otherwise, since I found out how to do transparency. On the blue bg it's about right (only ALMOST invisible :).

So I started with an interesting and probably impossible flower formation.. and tried to make it look possible.
(1.5 hrs, including tracing the drawing and cleaning the lines? dunno.)
Not done yet, just sick of tweaking for the time being.

Been a while since I'd done any serious pixeling. 's still fun.

further revisions:

EDIT:
BTW, what happened to the original purpose of this thread? The Line Art thread seems to be dead, so this is just the Doodle thread now.  (I was looking for a place that it'd be appropriate to link this absurd torch holder 'lineart' from.)

Quick possible album cover I whipped up in about an hour for a self-motivated music project I'm working on.

Drawing up the face took most of the time; for the text that spells "8064" I just looked online for a font that I edited to make work for this (called "Archer Flat") -- the bottom font I made as a cross between the "Atari Kids" font and one of the fonts on a Koto album: http://www.dragonslairfans.com/music/koto.jpg -- I suppose it's best to cite all the different fonts used in even a "doodle" of sorts.

Started off as a silly drawing I made in class, because, well, precalc sucks.  http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/SCAN0001%20(2).jpg

Glitter from Kidd Video

Here's the original lineart
http://share.cherrytree.at/showfile-13724/glitter2.png
Originally the pic wasn't even meant for pixelart, but I needed a more or less fresh pic for a tutorial I made for this years SAGE.
I still want to colour the original, though bg painting gives me a hard time^^'

@Surt: Indeed, pretty awesome tilesets :3 Those grey bg patterns are really cool
