Open up ;O + portrait ;@

on: April 28, 2007, 02:25:49 pm
Hi, I'm new here. I'm Preston, age 14. I like hands. :)

Anyways, I've been heavily involved in pixelling what will hopefully be a nice looking hand.

It's supposed to be knocking something.

So, before I start adding any texture, I'd like some crits, feedback, and anything else you've got for me.  :-*

Might just throw it out there, that I've been lurking here for quite some time.  :D

Update:

Not really an improvement, just trying something, tell me what you think.

More Update :@

Portrait I was working on, but it sucks D:

Can't get alot of things correct, especially the left eye and the jawline and headshape.

Crits, comments and edits are appreciated ;P

i disagree.  dithering is a wicked texture at this resolution, and texture should only be applied where it will describe form.  it might help in some small places around the hand, but that's only where the dither might be cloes to the actual texture of the hand/skin.  id say stick with descriptive lighting and it will look 10 times better.

this looks good so far.  i would like to see a bit of AA in places to help smooth it, but so far so good.
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I have to agree with Adarias, dither can be a most wicked thing, and that's not the style I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks guys, I will work on AA. :)

I'd appreciate and critique about the form so far. Also, do you think adding more colours would be beneficial?

Way too high. Thumbs aren't in line with the rest of the fingers.

I think the position of the thumb was the culprit, rather than the actual size of it. Though I did shorten it slightly. Thanks guys.

Need more improvement in that regard?

Updated.

Still seems a bit off, I'd suggest shortening the thumb a bit more as a whole, the top part of the thumb seems a bit too short, at least compared to the other 2 parts.
Aside from that, It's looking good.

Tried an edit, looking at my hand for reference. Damn, hands are hard to draw. I might update it later since it doesn't look quite right.

Edited again, kinda hard doing this in five minutes spurts through out the day. Gets confusing.

Edit: Candiru, I find it hard to draw examples of improvements from your edit, because my attention is too diverted by some flaws in the edit. D:

Here's my hand @_@ Perhaps I have strange finger to thumb proportions. The angle is different and it becomes evident that some anatomy is wrong in my artwork, but I'm not going for 100% realism, I just want it to look like a realistic looking hand.

Sorry for the large image 56kers :(

if your're supposed to be knocking on a door your fist would be more clenched, as in candiru edits.

Not really, I often knock lightly... imagine bare knuckle boxing vs. "pro wrestling", pro wrestlers aren't allowed to have closed fists... that's more or less how I knock... o.O
heh

More or less what I'm trying to say is it depends on the person, some people will clench their fist more than others.

Feron, it all depends on which set of joints in your fingers that you knock with. I knock with those closest to the tips of my fingers, so I think the pose is valid. @_@

Edit: I didn't think the form was reading too well, save the fingers and the thumb, so I tried to fix that. Still very much wip in those areas.

An Improvement?

I suck at shading large areas D:

I just wanna join in on the how-I-knock thing. There is certainly much variety in the field of knocking. Me, I've always done it with the back of my hand, like this.

Now, regarding the shading on yours, Presley. I think your latest post is a step down from the last edit in your first post.. wow, confusing. You really ought to get a better reference on the anatomy of ones hand. I mean, you've got that photo there, but it hasn't got the best lighting... I'd suggest you take a new reference photo in a better lit area and study it more, then come back to this.

Rox, I totally agree with you. I guess I had been looking at it for too long.  :D

Feron, strange how there can be so many different variations on such a basic task. ;P

It's actually a good thing to think about when you're building a character in my opinion.
Not really how they knock. :P But to think of the small things that everyone does differently, even things that may not be totally noticeable.
Individuality. :)

Sorry to slightly derail your thread.

I like this one so far:

But it seems theres a tad too much uh, fat... on the lower section of the thumb.

As far as references go, why not just do some adjustments on your photo and use that as a reference?

It looks pretty good so far. As with Snippa I prefer the second last one most. Just keep working at it and use your reference strongly and I'm sure it'll turn out great. Some dither (if the shades are close enough) might help with smoother transitions but only worry about this once your volumes are blocked out and you're detailing.

I can't use a lone finger, broken them each too many times whilst skating. D:

No, you've gone completely in the wrong direction; this doesn't look like a hand at all. ;P

Skin usually has quite a lot of saturation in it, and significantly more contrast between highlight and midtone, than between two shadow values than is present in your pic.
Furthermore, I think all of his features look slightly out of place. Here's a nice picture of a skull you can use to find the average relative positions of the various features that make up our faces: http://www.pugsly.com/A-9991.jpg
