@ Malor: the "cannon" ain't a cannon, as you guessed; it's the "exhaust-flame thing". ;)
I see your point about the rockiness... though I think that your edit is a bit too rough. most images of asteroids I've seen ( like this one http://www.solstation.com/stars/eros3.jpg ) seem to be rather round/"potatoeish" in shape; so I tried to mimic that.
Though I might just do what you did, for the foreground asteroids.

Ah, yes asteroids are smooth it seems...apologies. And now that I know its not a cannon, It is much more obvious what direction it is pointing :-[.. Seeing as it's the exhaust flame thing, would it be better if it were a continous flame like you see in most shoot-em up space games?

I'm not going to pretend this is a small task either; certainly none of us here can claim to have accomplished it.  it's the realm of masters.  still, it's what we all have to try for.

Very nice stuff I have to say. Reminds me quite a bit of Toaplan games like Truxton. Looking forwards to see more :D
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

thanks for all the feedback guys! very much appreciated
here's some progress on the jungle stuff... not too much of a jungle yet, but I need the basic elements first I guess :)

I'm not to sure which colors of the grass I should use... I'm kinda leaning towards the 2. (middle) version...

The first one gives off a foresty area vibe. Kind of an untamed jungle. The second one seems more dry, and still a good one, but the third one looks kind of like overkill on the yellow.

Judging from the rocks, that ain't a tropical jungle, so I say go with the second :).
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

some more progress...

the dirt stuff is pretty ugly atm; needs a lot of work. I'm pretty happy with the grass tiles though, just might need some more edge tiles I guess...
the gooey flesh thing will probably be animated, and I'll need lots of these, since I don't want to much repeating stuff...

WOOOW !

Your grass tile is the best I've ever seen. I think you beat all the classics', including SD3's. Congrats.
I think your alien dirst is fine too but the repetition kills it ; you should make a more complete mockup before editing it.

Will the yucky flesh be able to move on the ground ? If no, you should "root" it more in the dirt.

thank you for the feedback, fil! :)
yea, you'r right about the repetition... the dirt needs some more tiles, or some proper tiling to say... I kinda drew the texture and then copy and pasted it without making sure it tiles well; I'll work on that next.

the gooey flesh organ thing won't be able to move around, it will just pulse around at the ground. I realy need to root it more, you'r right about that... atm it DOES look a bit if it where floating

here's some more progress... didn't get too much done today. Just rootet the "Akira"-omnivore flesh a bit more, added some small plants, and made the dirt tiles tile better....
still not too fond of them, but well...

for 64x64 your ground tile had very visible grid. I hope I helped that aspect a bit. You're right to not have a lot of lightness variation between your ground tile colors, because they're supposed to be background... but do you really need purple shadows pink highlights as if it's flesh? The project is looking great, generally.

Thank you so much for the feedback and the edit, Helm! very much appreciated! I kinda have a habbit of "purplefying" everything, so I used your colors as a base for the new tiles. I chose to scrap the old ones since I came to the conclusion that I'd better off, adding larger cracks and structures as additional tiles.
someone at PJ mentioned that the gooey flesh thing was out of perspective, so I edited that too.
