The Official Pixelopolis OT-Creativity Thread

on: October 10, 2005, 07:11:24 pm
By general concensus by the representatives, I'm happy to present the Official Pixelopolis OT-Creativity Thread.

The purpose of this thread is to allow members to post non-pixel works they had a hand in creating. This can be anything from CG art collaborations to bits of software, photographs, music compositions, or anything else that falls out of the generel perview. Same rules apply as far as content. Try to keep it clean or link and warn, etc... We're trying this out on a temporary basis to judge if it benefits the forum as a whole. Enjoy!

Hooray! Yeah, it's nice to see an area for people to post non-pixel shiz.
Here's something that's been bouncing around my brain. I had a pixel version , but it went the way of the dodo.

Ha ha, yeah, really.

Is that pic based on The Suffering?  I've never played that game.

nice tunes pixelblink, a bit spare for my liking though.  If I'm not in the relaxing mood, I like my beats ADHD style.

Evan:  buh???

Helm:  nice!  Really, really nice.  Translation by any chance?  I don't speak the Greek.  What's the comic about, overall?

.Takam: those are some nice ambigrams.  Is that Angels and Demons cover your own version?

pixelblink:  adhd means attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder.  Think this.  Or most anything by Venetian Snares.

i don't do much of anything other than pixelart (though i've been wanting to change that for some time now) and currently don't do much of anything at all, but here's one of my latest non pixels (inks + photoshop). if i can find the time i want to get more into traditional arts, and to generally do some keeping up on crucial basics

that one's a quickie (for me anyways, i don't know, took some 45+ minutes). arrrgh at the right eye, i should have stuck an eyepatch on it  >:|

heh, obviously i'm unable to finish anything

ok, i don't have anything productive to say about the stuff posted really.. erm, it's quite cool? heh

Haha, my bad, I didn't realize it was the Art thread, I just saw "Official Pixelopolis OT..." in my browser, so I posted my random piece of art.

Hehe, those pictures were pretty awesome, though...

And I made some real art, but it's not really worth a topic:

Oh yeah, it's jawesome. I suppose it's pixels except for the random scribbles, which were a result of me messing with my tablet pen thing.

I can't pretend to be a musician.  But I've enjoyed messing around with sound ever since I discovered the joys of a microphone and an unregistered copy of sndsampler on my family's macintosh performa so many years ago.

without further ado, here's the results of me dicking around with Live.  These are my favorite ones so far.

something

Made with samples from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, animal crossing, and Evil Dead II.

random sounds (something else)

Field recordings of my hometown early last summer, at around 10:00 at night.  I wish I knew what that bird call was.  The music at the end is just filtered tape noise.

I read that as: You're going to pixelheim?

And I was all like DOOD WHERE'S PIXELHEIM I'M GOING THERE RIGHT NOW  ???

Quote from: Darion
Hot shit, Saw.

Steaming pile of feces?  :D

Also, Pixelblink: I'm warming up to some of your stuff.  Krunchtime is nice, and Pizza Pete is pretty enjoyable.  Stripped Again is too long, but what's in there is good.

There's some really nice stuff in this thread so far.
Zach: I really like those pixel sketches, especially the guy with the baseball cap, and the robot dude with the long black arms.  Those viking dudes are pretty rad, too.

Proving I don't know when to stop...
Baby's first gabber workout: Frog Blast the Vent Core (plz turn up ur volume all teh way kthx)

Monsoon2d: hahaha, the little head is hilarious. And don't worry about your reputation, you have gained cool points in my opinion I will always remember you for this picture. ;p
Zach: Maybe I'll try pixeling it now that you bring the idea up. >:] And great stuff as usual. The exhuasted guy in the baseball cap looks like how I feel when i'm driving home from work.
Jamie: Studying up on value? I'll do a drive by C+C and say find a drawing 'how to' book to get some info on shading forms. Nice start so far. :]

naturally the nose is cut off before the plate is screwed on. ;)

(the prop that we used was a bit more spaceous, and the actor apparently had a bendy nose) :)

First of all:

HAPPY THANKS GIVING EVERYONE

quit pixeling, and go be with your families.

As to pyros question about snes on my PSP, you have to have a version 1.5 psp, and you can actually downgarade 1.51 1.52 and 2.0s to 1.5 to do this, newer psps may come with 2.1 or 2.5 versions of the firmware, which can't be downgraded unfortunately. so if you get your hands on a 1.5 psp, then you can run homebrew on it, i think I went to www.psp-hacks.com to get all the stuff. hope that helps.

I'd put it in the offtopic if there were an offtopic.

And I'd make one, but it wouldn't be official.

But I could sticky it...

Hold that thought.

Opps sorry I thought this was the OT thread too.  Anyway I have a poem I wan't crits on.  Please.
Morrowind:
The Locked Chest

O’ do I wonder what is inside that locked chest
Could the item locked inside truly be the best?
O’ what could it be?
Tell me!  Tell me!  Tell me!
For shame I cannot unlock
Yet for I get a shock
I remember the code
The one to end this ode
To boost my security skills
So I can unlock that box and pay my bills
Truly it must be worth a great deal
Yet to my surprise I feel
Unsatisfied, did this I truly earn?
To see inside of which I yearn
I get what I have honestly earned
For the chest is trapped, and I am burned
Now scorched and lifeless on the floor
I lay to marvel and adore
Those witty men and women who make the chest
Know how really to be the best
To truly win is not to cheat
For it’s the satisfaction you desire to meet
Not the ending cut scene or the bonus clips
But by winning honestly and with only tips

Mercury Rising:  Although I admire you for attempting a rhyming poem, and not going straight to free verse, I think you got a little too caught up in making each line rhyme, and haven't paid enough attention to rhythm.

Also, some things that annoy me:

"O’ do I wonder what is inside that locked chest
Could the item locked inside truly be the best?"

The use of "inside" twice in about the same place in each line bugs me.

Use more punctuation, you make use of question marks and exlcamation points but not periods.  Some lines are confusing, such as:

"For shame I cannot unlock
Yet for I get a shock  "

Does this read "For shame I cannot unlock / Yet, for I get a shock." ?  I think so, but reading through it the first time is awkward.

This poem stinks of lines whose only purpose is to rhyme.  This is the largest problem with this poem (aside fromt the subject matter, perhaps.  My favorite poems are generally ones that reveal an interesting way to look at something, or a feeling, not ones that preach, like this one... and ethics in video games, I feel, is not something that suits a poem). Lines that are only in place to rhyme clutter a poem and are unecessary.  Avoid them at all costs.  In a poem, every line should bring something to the poem.  Rethink these lines and ask yourself if you actually do something with them.

Now, I'm not an expert at poetry, so take this advice with a grain of salt.

I took some of your ideas into account and came up with a whole new poem.
THE Locked Chest

A long hunt through dungeons
Lock picks used and saved
Yet what of those chests I’ve past
The ones I have left locked
What items could they contain?
Daedric?  Glass?  Ebony?
Or could it just hold bungler bane
Nevertheless I always think
What items could they contain?
A chest is up ahead
For I am presented with a option
Deep have I traveled into this cove
With lock picks running low I must choose
To save or to use
This question presents a problem
A gamble par say
One save a pick for a later chest
The other takes that chance
Uses left is way too low
Yet I can't help think
What items could they contain?
For the choice could make the difference
Debts or Cash
Skooma or Flin
Right or wrong

Well since we're posting poetry now... I wrote this one a ways back:

SEASONAL

spring

my heart
torn feet and blistered souls
aching to release
shattered and conformed

walk a thousand loves
bereft of energy
empty
lifeless

summer

my thirst
parched and whimpered tastes
anti-saliva to the masses
drink the sand

crawl to redemption
wait for the buzzards
shallow
nothingness

fall

my breath
crisply disenchanted and crackles
leaves without voices
offences from the noise

step through silence
anticipate the changes
gusting
windy

winter

my battle
eagerly wait for the next
barb-wired helmet
protection from the cold

pillage the abyss
drop the pin
hollowed
echoes

Yay poetry.  Here are a couple I wrote a while ago.  I should write more; I don't do enough creative stuff.

Sheep

The road of gold is stretched before your feet,
The selfsame road continues far behind.
The path is not so hard to walk along,
Though rather boring, offering no new sights.

Still you are sure
That o'er the hill,
Around the bend,
Far off ahead--
Will lie a change.

But as you mount the hill and round the bend,
You find that nothing different lies ahead,
Though still inside your head you keep on thinking
That somehow there must be a way to change.

And passing all the gray and silent people,
The sounds of footfalls echoing through your head,
You start to realize that this road will go
Ahead of you on to infinity.

The road before you and the road behind
Are alike in every single little way.
So you survey the edge and look far down,
Considering the jump and then the fall.

How would it be to take that step of faith?
And would it hurt to fall so very far?
The questions rush around inside your brain,
And so you shut them out and take a chance.

As you take the step,
Leaving the endless golden road,
You realize that the edge holds no fall,
But a different path, with choices all your own.

After looking back at all the people,
Still caught amid the rat-race of their lives,
You turn about and head down your own path,
The escape from the road of the herd.

A Prayer for Ideas

Oh, form in us a curious heart,
That we forevermore may raise
Ideas that so quickly dart
Forever trapped within a maze.

Ideas that we hold within,
Protected from the cruel world,
Die, never to be seen again,
Never raised, like flags unfurled.

Remind us that ideas, like we,
Need air and light and love to grow.
So we must ever set them free,
That they may flourish, for we know:

A thought inside will surely die,
But one set free finds wings to fly.
Always remember: a preposition is not something you should end a sentence with.

I haven't written any poetry in a while either.  Here's something that I'm not too embarassed to show:

A romantic could say
That God must be benevolent and kind.
For proof, he would point to you:
A beauty that must be from heaven.

I would be inclined to agree,
But in the end I would decide
That de Sade was right, and God is most cruel.
For proof, I'd need only your foul personality.

If it is a rendition what program did you use?  If 3dsm, would you mind emailing me the file as an exemplar?  I’m learning how to use the program myself, primarily because the tutorials are rubbish.

thanks fellas.

Polyester: No, the android body was a retarded design.

Flaber: It's all made in the thing with ones and zeros.
Digikrang so to speak.

Mercury: I use 3dsmax. No, I can not mail you the file.
It's quite large (around 300 megs), I spent alot of time on it (hence I don't want it floating around), and it uses some non standard plugins.
Besides, the tutorials that come with max are excellent.

Ok, nevertheless how do you get effective reflections and realistic metal?  I need all the help I can get because I just joined the Animation team for team 25 in FIRST Robotics and we need all the help we can get.  It seems now I know more than the kid who did our complete animation last year by himself.  Exhale noisily...  We still count as rookies though because last year was our first entry.  Any nippy tips for an aspiring newblet animator?

Final Fantasy: the spirits within was most likely the worst animatied movie evvar. Seriously, that one sucked.
They did some nice models for the movie though; but that doesn't help when they look dead on screen.
Blah.

Krang was a TMNT villain. The main villain along with Shredder.

Remaking the eye for Krang; figured a good start would be to make a correct human anatomical eye, with the proper IOR-values and all that.

Sevenfingers: Brilliantly detailed stuff there. You've made something 3D rendered to be proud of! I knew I recalled the character from somewhere. Until I read that he was a tmnt villian I thought he was the over-bloated brain character from that cartoon Widget.

Anyway, I thought I'd post a link to the next Black Hole issue, considering I posted the third issue here earlier.

Here's the cover:

And here's a link to the episode: http://www.pixeljoint.com/istvan/bh4.htm

AND here's a link to the main website: http://www.pixeljoint.com/istvan/blackhole.swf

Sorry for any confusion there.

Greek: I can recognize it.  I can't understand it.

That's a fascinating comic format to use, how it works both clockwise and counterclockwise.

Badass.  Let's see some more.

1: so tired. Is there a reason? Every day I find myself in the same positions. Everybody works like this

2: one day I'm going to drop everything and just go. I'll go far away. I don't deserve to feel constantly that I am

3: on a predistined path. The less I understand, the more I give in, mechanically, one foot after the next, we do not choose what to think, we do not choose to live

4:we breathe all the same air, but we are all so different. I don't know where to begin, and I end up

1,2,3,4 being clockwise. As you can see the text loops in itself and it can be read clockwise and counterclockwise, as you guessed from the layout. I'm glad you like my comic. Here's another and then I stop.

1: jenny, grab a RKG-3M we have company. - hold up, I'm looking...
2: Mike has grown very distant as of late, and he never misses a chance to talk abruptly to me. - Get ready to run.
3: Okay, on 3...
4: DON'T FALL BEHIND! 'there he goes again...' -I'm carrying ammunition, you know!
5: Maybe it's because he told me he loves me a few days ago and I answered '..thanks'. GOD! I'm so stupid!
6: It's not that I don't want him, but some things take their time, you can't force th-- SMOKE! RUN!
7: LEARN TO SHOOT, ASSHOLES!  'but he's so cute and adorable'
8: Okay, maybe I overreacted. I'll make it up to him today after I clean the TAR-21.
9: 'let's see if there's any rice soup cans left that he likes

Taking to heart some of the C+C I've recieved on at this board I became motivated to study the fundamentals and try my hand at more traditional mediums. I'm looking foward to getting back to pixel art someday to apply the things I'm learning.  Looking at the pixel art section, It's amazing how much several of you have improved in the past few months!

Just toying around with digital colouring, since I don't do it often.  My computer is too old to run Photoshop now, so I had to do it in PSP with aliased brushes... hense why the resizing looks like crap.  Tried to do a modern comic book colouring approach.  I love being able to repair lineart (his left arm in #1) by cutting and pasting redrawn parts.

http://action.mancubus.net/images/book/book.htm

Just for fun I thought I'd post a children's book I had been illustrating with a friend of mine, he wrote, I drew.  I'm not terribly thrilled with many of the pages, but seeing as how this was the first time I had EVER picked up a paintbrush and tried watercolour, I'd say it turned out rather decent.  The biggest flaw, I was rushed to finish it and the backgrounds suffered severely.  Fortunately I did them as sperate objects (ink lineart, watercolour page) so I can redo the painting without redoing the lineart, which I think looks nice.

I think this is the first time I have ever posted "fine art" here.

And it doesn't have to be a sticky if it's always floating about on the first page anyway.

Sorry, but my pencil keeps going! For these drawings, I whipped out a mirror and began to understand the some principles of drawing from life. Its improtant to me that I be able to draw myself without staring down the mirror, so I'll probably do a couple more studies of my face. Once again, the negative looks pretty sweet. Heres a positive: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/God_Slayer/Face.png

I didn't bother to make any revisions to my projects for this class, so I put some masterpieces on the revisions sheet thingy for extra credits.  I hope the A+ is my grade for the class and not just the teacher playing along with my stupidity and giving me an A+ for my doodles.

I had a project due first thing this morning. 200 word story and 10 images in French. I hope that the quality of the images makes up for the lack of them (it is French class, not an art class, so these might be considered impressive) and the creativity of the story makes up for it only being 113 words or so. I started on Friday night, didn't do much on Saturday, wasted a lot of time Sunday and finished at 1am this [Monday] morning.

Here's the story for anyone that's curious or wants to know what the hell is going on in the story.
Quote
Il y était un garçon qui habitait en ville. Son meilleur ami était une banane. La banane s'appelait Kliff. Ils ont joué, ri, travaillé et porfois mangé ensemble. Souvent, Kliff était remplacé après on le mangeait.

There once was a boy who lived in the city. His best friend was a banana. The banana was named Kliff. They would play, laugh, work and sometimes eat together. Kliff was often replaced after eating.

Un jour le garçon et Kliff, la banane, ont combattu. À cause decela les amis sont devenus les ennemis. Le garçon est allé a la maison et a regardé la télé et mangé de la lasagne. Parce que la lasagne est trés bonne.

One day the boy and Kliff, the banana, fought. This caused the friends to become enemies. The boy went home and watched television and ate some lasagna. Because lasagna is really good.

Le garçon a vraiment aimé la lasagne.

The boy really liked lasagna.

<<Je vous aime vraiment, lasagne>> il a dit à la lasagne.

"I really like you, lasagna" he said to the lasagna.

Alors ils sont devenus les meilleur amis. Ils ont joué, ri, travaillé et porfois mangé ensemble.

So they became best friends. They played, laughed, worked and sometimes ate together.

Old stuff (I'm guessing from about 6 or 7 years ago)
     Realism (Bruce Lee)
     Sketch

Newer Stuff (Done in the past year)
     Realism (Nudity)
     Sketch

Definately the few figure drawing sessions I have attended in the past year have helped my art much more than anything else has.

Since I got into pixel art, I haven't really done anything else besides that. So, uhm... here's some older stuff.  :P

This was done about 4 years ago. Now that I look at it again, the shading makes me crinch and the proportions are all over the place.  :-\
It's supposed to be Trap-Jaw from Masters of the Universe.

And then for some completely bizarre reason, I decided to turn him female:

The female Trap-Jaw was well recieved at a MotU fan board, and by popular demand I did a female version of Beast Man:

makin a CG game (this is a mock-up, but coding has started though)...

here are the steps i took for the ship:

1- first i quickly created a basic ship shape in 3D Canvas, took a screen shot of top-down view, and moved into photoshop
2- in photoshop, I quickly blobbed in some basic colouring
3- upped the contrast, gringified it, textured it a bit more
4- added more dynamic lighting making the wings appear to be folded and added shadow in various places. *done*

TakaM: What? I've never seen a kangaroo drag it's tail during a sprint-hop before...at least not on any of the documentaries I watch.
Oh, and that pic of yours has an extreme likeness to WindWaker...You did a good job, if imitation is what you were after.

i remember reading it somewhere.. might not be true, but I think kangaroos can only jump if their tail is on the ground at the point they push off.. they can lift it in mid air I guess, might be a balance issue or maybe its some wierd connection in their bones

and my image, I did start off intending for a windwaker-esque image, its just how it progressed, made it easier to draw so I figured I'd embrace it :P

My animation was referenced by a real kangaroo jump, so I guess it's only on the first jump and once they're sprinting it isn't needed anymore. I may need to add some elasticity to the jump though

Vector images use maths to calculate how everything's supposed to look, saving only information like line positioning, angles, curves and thickness into the file, then generating them every time you open the image.

Vector is most commonly used for logotypes and things that're supposed to be printed at a very large scale, as that way of creating images gives precisely no distortion at all when resized.

Hi, Don't think i have ever posted in this thread but there is a first time for everything. I havn't really drawn much by hand since i left school because as a handful of you must know it's good to draw during lessons lol. Anyways i was bored so i drew this and i thought i might post it. What do you think? Any pointers on how to make it better. Thanks.

flaber: the technogadgetry is pretty cool, but your anatomy and depth (I understand the lack of the latter on this piece) needs work. Also, attend to the shapes of the big wires, they should be of even width, now there's a few bumps. Where one of them connects to the shoulder, that whole connection is off, as far as perspective goes.

Really glad to see you try very challenging designs.

thanks. im still really trying to learn anatomy. Bought a few books, and have been looking at alot of reference. So at the time that i was drawing this, that was as far as i had come, fully aware of the misproportions, but doing the best i could. Still a big learning process for me, but im feeling alot of improvement
As for the shoulder bit, found that to be one of the most difficult places of the whole piece - erased alot.  Should it be more foreshortened, ex more coming towards us?
and well the big wires.. that was just poor on my part :P. i suppose i got alittle lazy and tired

thanks again for the encouragment
i really appreciate the thoughts and comments (from both you and alex)

both more foreshortened and more coming towards us, as the plane on which it connects to the shoulder is pretty much aiming somewhere above the head of the viewer, but not much.

Keep it up.

I completely half-assed the coloring, especially towards the end. The pipes are all completely half-assed because I hate minute details like those. I generally rushed this piece, especially as I was nearing completion. I think the only saving grace is the lighting effects I added in Photoshop. Generally, I'm not satisfied with the end result, but I'm far too lazy to fix it up.

Made for a composition competition in which the max length was 3 minutes, otherwise it would have been longer.  Also had to use this motif throughout:

No Photoshop, no colors at my house I would feel comfortable enough to assail this with, Xion. Thanks.

I hope this inspired spell last.

Just an interesting palette I put together.

Black, White, then all the rest on the left are combinations of one of each: 0, 64, 128, then all on the right are one of each of: 128, 255, 0

I think I may try something with this palette, but maybe someone else would care to try as well.
