Street Fighter-style self-portrait

on: February 12, 2007, 03:38:15 am
I haven't done much as far as large sprites go so I did this as a challenge for myself... I figured it'd be fun to do a self portrait in the style of Street Fighter. Took me about two hours. I used Street Fighter 3 as my reference for scale and proportion.

That's a pretty nice sprite there. The only thing that sticks out at me is his right thumb, which seems to be curving the wrong way. It probably doesn't even need to curve at all. It just looks a bit long and skinny. If you took the curved part off completely, I think it would look better, especially considering the angle/curvature of his hand.

It looks great, the only things are

a) The thumb as mentioned above
b) also the wrist band on the right (our right) should cover that one flesh pixel in the middle of it.

Slightly modified version. In addition to the things mentioned I fixed some light source inconsistencies and tried to clean up that messy area around the midsection.

Well, in the current position of his hand, I don't think his thumb would show at all. Or he should be purposly bending it forward so strangly. I tried it, it's not impossible, but uncomfterable, and not a position I would use when fighting. I suggest erasing the thumb, since to me it seems the most logic position for it would be behind his hand/other fingers. You should try the position once, so you can see for youreself. Furthermore this is looking sweet, keep it up.

cool!  looks kinda like Scott Pilgrim :D  I think the waist needs to be thicker, and the piece of hair that is hanging right in the sprite's face looks unrealistically bent to me.  The cowboy belt buckle looks a little out of place design-wise - there are no other oval shapes in the piece, and it doesn't fit the characters style either. some really fun details in there otherwise!

Thanks! Bryan O'Malley is one of my favorite artists ever. As far as the belt goes, the outfit is actually exactly what I was wearing when I drew it so... I guess I don't have very good fashion sense :^p

I'm not a great fan of how the pants and legs are done. Would you be okay with an edit?

I thought I'd edit the legs but this turned out in an all-purpose edit. Pay attention to what I did with your palette. It started in about 30, right? It's 18 colors now. Do you see any loss of information or detail? There's lots of little edits here and there, generally give it a thorough check.

Also,

don't worry, that's the whole purpose of drawing yourself as a fighter sprite to begin with.

Helm, you are insane. But you're right.

I managed to work my version down to a paltry 18 colors and I learned a couple other lessons from your edit as well. The only thing from your edit that I discarded was the dithering on the legs, because that would really hurt if I were to try to animate it.

Cool on the colors, but isn't the shin still a bit short? It should be two full heads.

Oop... I *thought* yours looked taller. I'm not very good with proportions... I have anatomy books but I'm usually too free-spirited to refer to them.

hey nice!  definitely needs some motion on the torso, even some slight lighting changes would go a long way - as it is his hips and shoulders appear to be one big connected piece of plastic, on spring legs!  the guitar movement is nice and natural, just a little shifting and changing through the body would probably finish that off nicely.

I love the animation, the only thing bothering me (or looks strange) is that the legs don't really bend to create the bounce / lift it just kind of pops of to the left and right at the knee section. I think that the knees should sort of bend and the pelvic region should have some motion.

I love the arms/ hands and the hair and the feet.

PS : I am sure in the eyes of us pixeler's you really do look this kewl ;)
