new man

on: February 03, 2007, 05:22:33 pm

any comments or suggestions before I continue?

I think the pose is a little flat... and the arms may be short, but I'm not sure, tweaking ensured though.
some suggestion would be very nice though :)

The pose is a little strange, it appears has hands are closed and resting somewhat above his hips.  A more comfortable version of the pose is to have fingers splayed and on hips rather than above.  The arms also seem short.  With arms relaxed, elbows are around the bottom of the ribs and wrists are around crotch level.  I think there might be something wrong with other body proportions here that's throwing the relationships off.

For the flat pose I'd say it has something to do with his feet being straight together.  It's hard to see since you haven't drawn his shoes in yet, but if one leg is in front of the other his hips would be tilted a little and so would his shoulders to compensate.

Leg positioning improves it a lot.  I still find the hand gesture strange, but not unreasonable.

Arms are too short. Love the color choices.
And I am finally seeing that you were the one worth eating.

Looks pretty. I think it would look even prettier with higher contrast. The left (our left) hand is hard to make out, and it's positioning seems a little unnatural. The hand on the right is just a little too small.

Really nice work Zach. Always a fan of your stuff and this is no exception. So beautifully rendered and the colors blow me away. Love your strange hue mixes just fantastic.

The definition is superb, great start, and the darker colours in the palette, although random to me, are looking awesome.

My one crit would be that the left (his right) forearm looks a tad too short.

i think the shadows could use a bit more warmth, but only if youre going for extremely realistic colors. the mixing looks realistic up to say the 3 darkest entries.

Darker creases, evening out the balance of highlights of each leg compared to one another, pockets. Just some examples of how i would steer it, take away what you will.

Also, I don't really understand why the right side of the body is more highlighted, but the left side of the pants has more of the pinkish highlight... Not really sure about it.

The black outline hurts it.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

yes I totally agree I think the black outline is too much, maybe using the 2nd darkest shade would be more appropriate and use the black for picking out darker spots..

looks awesome  ;D

Zach is this for a game or something? If not, you could just go ahead and settle on a background color, and then pixel the 'sprite' normally on top of it (minimal aa and weighted outlines where needed) until it's no longer a sprite, but just a piece of pixel art. I really do agree the black outline could go, but selout - as Terley does above - isn't the only solution.

I don't like the way his < leg seems to just go straight down from his back/side. It's like the pants and belt have no depth and are plastered to his side. It also makes him look extremely topheavy.

this has to be looking somewhat better?

I've started to rid of the black outline and somewhat AA but still have traces of separation from the background
