D.O.H. [NEW UPDATE 4]

on: January 06, 2007, 02:43:27 am
HA As you guys probability remember I was working on a base for my online top down RPG called Dawn Of Heroes, here is a lil summary of it:

Quote
The game’s name is Dawn of Heroes, which in fact should already give you an idea of the theme. It will be programmed on an engine called dream maker, better known as BYOND. It will be graphically similar to a top down/face on view of any common adventure/RP handheld game. The game takes place in the far future, a gloomy corrupt city. At this, in the beginning of the game you are an orphan who always liked the martial arts, and after leaving the care of the foster home you set out to a dojo to learn martial arts. This in term basically serves as a tutorial and an introduction to one of 3 skills, combat. Each player can learn 3 skills or a “power” aside from the first, combat; the other two are a branch of a mental state or a kinesis. There is a variety of which 2 to choose from and you get them by embarking on short story missions.

An example of this would be pyrokinesis, to acquire it the player goes into a story mission on becoming a fireman. On duty an accident happens where you find yourself being able to control fire later on. Of course the story has more depth in the game as this is merely an example. Some powers we may include are Electrokinesis, Geokinesis, Gyrokinesis, Hydrokinesis, Pyrokinesis, Biokinesis, Morphokinesis, and more, each with their own story. The story wraps around a corrupt government and a military general trying to get rid of “parahumen” (players). The game features a karma system where it allows to player to choose his own destiny and missions type. Weather good/evil players can enjoy plenty of boss battles and minigames. There is still a lot untold and you might want to try and ask me questions, at which I will do my best to answer them.

If any of you guys interested in helping just PM me.

For the past couple days I have been working on a base for the game, and here is my WIP

I started out with the one to the far  left and with the help my Aczidenz and Ryumaru I worked my way to the far right, IMO like about 10x better.

And there is an update of a guy in armor. The sword blended in too much so i changed it a bit...

Well here is wat i have so far, one of my first sprite animations:

and here it is Animated:

transforming from normal to Hevy. here is him running, I was kinda proud of this.

So far i am pretty proud of my work, i am aware that i need a color pallet change but i haven't got to that yet, right now am working on the side view which is giving me a good challenge. There is still alot of flaws thats why i posted about it  :P for the help. I was thinking about a color pallet for the city, but i wasn't sure if i HAVE to stick to one pallet for the entire city? Well i don't know help me out guys.

HA I remade wat I lost and found the old file so here it is, I need with this one so feel free to edit it.

I started a mockup for the game. I emulated the style of a couple diferent techniques and made it my own, please....post some C/c or an edit. I need the help  :-[

Added some stuff to the wall, post C/c Ideas, or comments plz.

Well I changed the pallet of the wall to this:

and now am working on an interface based on a windows media player skin.

Here is the title screen, made by one of my friends, its not pixel art but its still awesome. Dont bother to C/c it i know its flaws but it wont get Fixed.

Oh btw i worked my but off making this so please dont steal it, (c) all rights reserved, plus your a jack ass if you do....

Post your WIPs for the side view, even if you're not happy yet.. someone might be able to point out something that'll help.

It depends on what restrictions you're working under. You don't have to keep one palette for an entire city, but rather each of your tiles should function off a specific palette (ie, 4 colors per 8x8 tile or something similar). What are you planning on coding the game in? Flash, or something else?

Why waste a good game idea on BYOND.. I tried that once and I thought it sucked.

Yea I was, but come to find out I must of never pasted it back to my WIP file and i dont save my GG canvas. So ill work on it again today. But i was wondering if I should make him in an agle or straight foward, i think il make both and decide wat looks best after ward.

Oh nvm HA I remade wat I lost and found the old file so here it is, I need with this one so feel free to edit it.

On byond, it has a 32x32 restriction for each unit, but you can put them together like tiles. The game will be programed on dream maker.

I want to see how the game idea caches on, if its really good I'll see if can transfer it to Game maker and have alot better sized sprites. But the problem with that is, I want to make it an online game and well I dont know any coders who are willing to do it for free and still be able to make it online.

Thats a very nice title picture. Also the wall is looking good.
Modern artists are told that they must create something totally original-or risk being called "derivative".They've been indoctrinated with the concept that bad=good. The effect is always the same: Meaningless primitivism

Something seems dodgy here.

your sprite, to be blunt, is very amateur, yet your wall is quite stunning.  It makes me think the wall is photoshop and color reduced.  I dont want to turn this thread into one of those "Purist vs. What-Ever-Gets-The-Job-Done" debates.  There just seems to be many pixel combinations and colors in your wall that a human would have to spend hours on to get right.  If this is photoshop and reduced I dont think many people will care because it looks quite good, I'd rather you were honest.

I would have said you put down lots of color to get texture, reduced it to about 6 colors with pattern dither on, and then added those cracks over the top.
don't Attack me for this - its just my opnion.

there is most likely more than one person working on this Feron, I do think the sprite work needs much more improvement, the palette needs work and there are some other things that could be improved about it.. heres an edit..

I think the head is way too big, compared to the backdrops something tells me it shouldn't be too chibi, its not perfect but I had a go at changing the palette slightly, hope any of this helps, goodluck with it.

well I don't believe that for a second, some parts are really good and others need a lot of improvement, It just seems obvious that there are 2+ people working on these graphics. I don't think this is all him.

i know chaos reasonably well; yes, well enough to vouch for him, and i know that if he says he made them, then he made them.   >:(
+ he doesn't have photoshop, gimp, paint.net, or any other image manipulation program  :P

onto the character.  i think that he is done reasonably well, and fits the style of the overall game.  one thing that you may want to do though, is reuse some of those awesome metal shades on the character.  he needs a bit More contrast, and a purplish outline tone.

Thx, but i still think it can be improved. People have been Acusing me since i first started working on pixel arts. I have learned just to take it as a complement. Altho you are different, I admire that you take a flame-free apraoch to share your opinion.

in a rush, will explain my edit later, should still be pretty helpful though:

you had way too many colors in that wall, so much so that there were 2 stragglers i couldnt find that made my image 17 colors when i only "used" 15.  the other thing is clarity. one of the most valued things of pixelart is clarity, it is unique to pixel art because the artist has FULL control over every single element of the image. the work you have now is good, but reminiscent of photoshop art where things are aaed unnecisarly and messily. i also pushed the higlights on the cracks, maybe just personal preference. i learned the technique from art in the game " chaos engine". go look it up, the art is pretty much awesome.

Wow - this is looking worlds better than the first time you showed it to me.

The one thing that bothers me about the tileset currently is that all of your tiles look very square - try to make some tiles that blur those sharp lines a little, play with some different angles, try to implement some different forms. Terley's edit of your sprite is nice, especially the edit of the torso - the one thing I would say is that it looks off-balance. Try playing with your ramps more, both in the sprite and in your tileset.

Keep up the good work, though.  :y:

this helps me ALOT, it takes skill to make something simple as more effect than a cluttered image, and on top of that have all the advantages of controll... I will defenatly be revising my image.
