im not exactly sure what you were going for but if you gave him shoulders and places his nipples in the right place it might look like what you were expecting out of it

heres an image of mine that seems to help lots of beginners:

although, once youve gotten the most out of that little piece( not much) i suggest you buy an anatomy book or gather a collection of good refrences on the net.

I think what you've done is learnt how to AA, and gone crazy on something that most likely needed some basic changes. over done the AA imo, and maybe you wanted abstract but maybe being abstract is an excuse for not taking the time to learn fundamental anatomy?
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

I would try to learn anatomy, but I hate doing realistic pieces, it is way to limited IMO.
Thanks Ryu, I will see what I can do.

arhh, I don't think its right basically copying the reference image, I'd personally try something completely different and try interpret what you've learnt into making it better.. But I suppose you're still in the basic learning stages, whatever gets ya goin  ;). check out the reference's shoulders compared to you'res, you dont have em. And the chest area is too sparse, looks shrivveled. Also, try not to mirror too much, just to get the structure balanced, otherwise you'll start pillowshading and everything will look unnatural.

He didn't copy the reference. The original piece was like this (though probably still inspired by ryu, it seems). He just made it bigger.
He needs hips.
The arms are really wonky. Looke like he's got rickets or something in the forearm. The shoulders are really flat.
I dunno what the part beneath the armpit is, but I don't think it curves in like that right under the arm.
The abdomen seems kind of abstract and not showing any kind of...abs. Like, what's with that upside-down beneath his chest?

So it not all that great.
But I don't think it is too bad for my first try. I am currently working on another piece, to work on anatomy.

"I would try to learn anatomy, but I hate doing realistic pieces, it is way to limited IMO."

This is bullshit, chief.  I'm calling you out on this one.  Every pixel artist here worth their salt is as stylish and stylized as you could ever want, and they ALL know their anatomy inside and out (literally).  You can only create good stylish art after you have mastered the fundamentals of realistic art.  Style is a perversion of reality (or an enhancement - I'm not using perversion in the pejorative sense here), but it can only succeed if you understand what it is that you are modifying or adding style to.

Basically, you're right, realism does limit you - but a lack of knowledge about artistic reality will limit you more than you can possibly imagine!  LEARN YOUR ANATOMY.  If you can't afford or get access to life drawing sessions then find some Hogarth or Loomis at your library or bookstore to get started.  Dig through old National Geographics for great bodies and faces of all shapes, colors and sizes.  Picasso didn't just start painting some crazyass cubes one day; he was an accomplished realist painter hailed as a prodigy for his understanding of light and form and anatomy.  THEN he went to arguably the farthest edge of stylization that can be imagined.

When you can positively identify the deltoids, or the latissimus dorsi, or the trapezius, or the obliques, then start munging about with pixels and color theory and anti-aliasing.  Otherwise you're gonna be fighting a battle on 5 fronts, and history is not on your side :P
