Giant Finger Beast

on: July 01, 2007, 05:13:20 pm
I was bored, and frustrated with other things, so I decided to chill out and work on one of Arachne's linearts;

Trying to get the shading right. It doesn't look right to me but I can't seem to work it out. C&C would be appreciated.

  • I feel... Saturated to some degree, out of tone.

It looks right to me as long as the light source is coming from the top right.

I'll work on tint/texture once I've figured out why its middle fingers trouble me so.

Well basiically if you look at the (viewers point of~) right finger (of the three, not the back "thumb" one) you see that it has this medium shading, while the middle finger has deep shading on a part that is angled to the light source as the other finger's part that has medium shading. If you would add some medium shading to the middle finger either from the top or from the right side I think your troubles will be gone. But thats just a suggestion though hehe.

Your lightsource seems a bit confused.
Light seems to be hitting the head and front leg up and to the side.
The two fingers to the left of screen seem to be being hit by light strictly from the top.
The yellow on the back of the hand looks like it's under very concentrated direct overhead sunlight as well.
The thumb seems to be lit from behind...

My intension was that the saturated yellow is a pigment in its skin, rather than a change in luminosity. The lighting's a little confused I guess because I second guess all the shadows in an attempt to consider ambient light.

I tried a bit of an edit;
