Josephin

on: November 16, 2006, 09:41:30 pm
I traced the hardest parts, but i tried to make the outline as original as possible, im not just very good with outlines. Well anyway, the shading is fully mine, dithered it all by hand, im not very good with dithering since i never really used it much in my earlier works. Ill accept critz and edits, but don't edit to much and make it to good since then ill have to copy whoever makes it better :P. Anyway, im proud since ive done it pretty fast, around 5-6 hours of work.. thats pretty fast for me since i don't pixel allot. Anyway enjoy i guess, its still W.I.P as you all see.

Awesome work. FINISH IT!

Heh.. actually, I should critique (that's what I do!).

Pink on chin could be smoother, more diffused.

Forehead has no dither for that dark shade near the right by the outline.

Need to AA the bottom eyelid.

Your darkest red hair shade is too dark, I think.

Here's a technique I would like to share with you:

It's called interlaced dithering. You should be able to reduce your palette by about 20 percent with this technique. But even if you don't reduce your colors, it should help you out.

Thank you, the technique looks kinda hard to do, im sure i can learn it sooner or later, thank you for sharing it :).  im sure gonna finnish it. I dont know if im gonna fix all the stuff right away since im pretty tired right now xD. I might reshade the picture later in the future and such, anyway did this while awaiting reply.

Nice update. Soften lines on neck. I think the specular on the lip is too bright (the 2 pixel diagonal). Should be a cooler and darker color.

Trust your dither instincts, one side of the checker is 'light', the other is 'dark'. Two different planes. The more contrast between the planes, the more 'metallic' or shiny something can appear. Most of the time you just want to make sure that your contrast in the checkerboard never gets too weak or too strong to maintain the effect so you can make successful shade transitions without having to resort to too much inconsistency, such as big pockets of non dither that might make us think there's a change in surface material.

Dithering from a pixeler's perspective is funny, since it creates soft and fuzzy at the same time, while smooth sheets of color are seen as hard, plastic, or slick, but too much contrast and its's reflective like metal again!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, im sure they will help me out since im pretty new to dithering. Im gonna try your technique since it seems alot smarter. Thank you.

Yet again i did this while i was waiting for the next reply, the ear could be better.. but bleh, also one colour has been removed that was pretty much useless, and her eyes have a new colour to. A bit brighter purple.

yeah so, pep, youre gonna show me how to do that interlaced dither thing right?
edit: nvm, i think i got the hang of it.
zoso: this is a wonderful piece, but the dithering is just dirtying it up. i really suggest you use the interlace technique. it will make all the wondeful hue changes and speculars look much smoother.

WOW  :o

Very good so far, can't wait to see the finished product.

I do think the hair should be a little more textured in the pony tail. Right now it's looking a bit stiff and unrealistic.

show reference maybe? parts of the ear look outlined which isn't a good thing. also you've got quite a few strays but i'm assuming you'll clean up when it's finished.
thanks Dogmeat!

A very nice rendition of the original reference. Did you choose the palette from the ref.? What about tracing the contour of the ref.? Either way you did well with the pixel placement. Good job!

You only use 1 pixel aa, if the lines you are smoothing out the aa can be longer too, like this:

aabbcc or aaabbbccc and so on or comibations of this.

Also you have too much layered up anti alias which just makes things look blurry.

This is quite old and I could do better now, but it shows what I mean in the examples on the right especially.

Keep in mind that aa is an approximation to make things appear to be smoother/higher res than they really are, and not just added pixels here and there.

And I would recommend killing the outlines and aa her properly to the background.

I might do an edit later when I have more time perhaps :)
Keep it up.

here's a quick edit. i didn't do the AA cause you've said you'd work on that already. mainly the ear & her right eye. also a bit on the neck.
thanks Dogmeat!

Right at the top of her nose she's got a pimple :P.  It's just a splotch of pink and it sticks out a lot to me. You maybe forgot to dither it or something? And while at the nose, there's an area of the outline of the nose by the eye that seems too straight; the line above it could be brought down a few pixels...if you don't get what I mean, I'll edit to show ya.  Also, donno if it's been said because I haven't read everybody's response, but the earing looks not 3d enough...just looks flat.

Other than that at the moment, it is an amazing piece.  The dithering is fantastic, and the highlight/shadow placement is dead on.  Great job ZoSo.

The AA on the neck makes the black line there not so obtrusive and different in the edit, so I'd definately consider some AA on that.

This is a really great piece, I truly admire it. But the line between the hair and the neck/shoulder really bothered me, it looks jagged:

See what I mean?

I made a little edit to get rid of the jagged edge:

Senad: Give me your sisters phone number plz  (As long as she's not too young  :D)

Good luck with your progress :)

I like the old palette more, this is really good. Try taking it in a more Greenish direction than purple.
And I am finally seeing that you were the one worth eating.

Just one thing i thought i'd point out, you've made her jaw quite square and her forehead kind of pulled back, so she loses some femininity i think. Although if you're not following the picture greatly then it's fine i guess - although the neck to jaw transition looks too much like a crease than a shadow atm.

Looks like someone in my film studies class.

Fixed the neck, fixed her right eye a bit.. I could't do green hueshift, it just looked wierd and she ended up looking like a zombie.. sorry. Anyway, i tried some greyscale.. looked pretty okay, i doubt i will use a greyscale as finnished product since i worked alot with the hues :P..

Anyway, any more crits?.. Keep me comming :D, its really helping me. And yea, thanks everyone :)

Edit :

I decided to keep the Purplely Pallette.. anyway heres the latest update, totally fixed all the dithering.
New/Old

I think this is getting finnished, time for a sexy backround :)!! Anyone got any suggestions?
