Running animation ?

on: December 27, 2017, 06:00:06 pm
Hello everyone, this is my first post here, so, hi !

I've just started practicing on sprite animation and I feel like my animations aren't smooth enough, so I would really appreciate any kind of feedback or advice on this: (animation-wise or just about the general look of my character)

Thanks all. :)

try speeding it up a little bit by halving frame duration, sometimes that choppiness is simply because of frame timings.

Thanks for the advice ! Here is the edit:

I think it's better, but there's still room for improvement. Any ideas ?  :)

lower the toes to flat on the ground for the step followthrough frame. the ones right after feet make contact with the floor.
i'd also remove the hair edge noise, and focus o. keeping the hair movement contained. not extreme enough to have the hair spike like that.

if you do want silhouette chang though consider more of a solid billow motion.

Here's the edit, is it better ? I also fixed her left leg which looked weird on the frame before she extends it forward.

The 1st and 4th frames last for 150ms and the others 100ms. It creates a cool timing for the arms maybe, but the hair and scarf's movement look weird because of it.
The hair is kind of expanding. Not so much in the latest version, but keep in mind keeping its overall size consistent.

The thing that bothers me the most is that the body falls instead of rising in the frames the legs extend. It's like that when walking because there's always a foot in the ground, but running is like making small leaps I guess :blind:

I quickly fixed those things. All frames 100ms long.
I also tried to separate the front leg from the back leg a bit, cleaned some things a bit, and made a less cazy scarf animation.

I hope it helps in any way or gives you ideas.

Hey, thank you for the reply! I do have a few issues with your edit though:
Quote

I see what you mean; but the inverted up-and-down motion in the edit looks just plain weird to me like this, I can't "see" each leg going from back to front and from front to back anymore, it looks as if she's moonwalking or something x') So I tried just keeping it as before but with all the frames lasting the same amount of time, is it better ? On the right is another try, where instead of bobbing up and down she leaps forward a bit, but I dunno, I don't really like it (plus it makes the scarf look really strange).

I also tried to fix the hair without making it look like it's made of cardboard, y'know, I want it to look fluffy and bouncy. So what I did is I put a transparent pixel between her hair and her scarf to show it ends there, I don't know if it's visible though :blind:
