What should I improve on my first sprite?

on: July 05, 2017, 03:48:36 pm
So, I did this after a tutorial and itīs my first sprite ever. I already did some pixel art before but in a weird way for a school project...
Anyway, I know the shoes are pretty messed up and the left arm looks kind of weird but I donīt know how to fix it.
Thanks

Honestly there's a lot you need to change here beyond just that.
Study some anatomy, for starters. That isn't to be mean about it, it's simply a step everyone has to go through at some point for any art style to work.
More relevant though, I'll itemize a list of things that need doing here:
>torso is too  much of a tube
>waist tapers off into the leg weirdly, making it look like his rightmost leg juts out of his crotch a bit
>head is a very strange shape, the hat squeezing in the top of it in an unnatural way
>the legs seem to be angled towards the left while the torso faces directly towards the camera

There's other stuff too, but right now you should focus on building blocks.
Look into Fun with a Pencil and some of the other books by Andrew Loomis, they're informative and relatively easy to dig up on google! They'll help you refine your grasp on a lot of things and get you well on your way through those essential beginner steps!
