What is onion skin?

I've seen it a couple of times in pixel art software and forums but I have no idea what it's used for, and I couldn't find any explanation for it online. What's the purpose of it?

It's an animation tool that shows the previous frame.

It's most efficient for higher-resolution line art, where there is not too much overlap.

There are variants and options, for example in z-uo's Pixeditor, you can display up to 3 previous and 3 next frames, and choose their opacity : typically, you want "far" frames to be much more transparent. The "future" frames get colorized in blue, the "past" frames get colorized red.
